Choral Choir (SA) - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1007138 Composed by Charles McCreery. 20th Century,Children. Octavo. 6 pages. St Maur Music #4822661. Published by St Maur Music (A0.1007138).  This song is the second in a series of ‘Fourteen Tolkien Songs’. It is headed ‘1’ because it is preceded in the set by a Prologue: ‘Farewell We Call to Hearth and Hall’, which is also available from Sheet Music Plus.   A comment on the collection of Tolkien songs by an Oxford piano teacher: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. The twelve songs, suitable for choir, evoke a dreamy, water-colour landscape with no harsh sounds, the tunes are singable and in a traditional style that Tolkien would surely have approved. Dr Julia Gasper, LGSM   A general comment on Charles McCreery’s music by a violinist and composer in the USA: ‘Charles McCreery’s beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ Samantha Gillogly   ‘The Fall of Gil-galad’ is appropriate for women’s choirs, children’s choirs, schools, music students generally, and anyone with a particular interest in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The MP3 which plays from this page is of the orchestral version of the song. A video illustrating this orchestral version can be seen on YouTube. Choral Choir (SA) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.856147 Composed by Trad. Arranged by Liz Garnett. A Cappella,Contemporary,Folk. Octavo. 4 pages. Liz Garnett #3417457. Published by Liz Garnett (A0.856147). I have loved this folk song since I sang Benjamin Britten's arrangement of it for solo voice and piano in my teens. This four-part a cappella arrangement has a lilt that those who know Britten's version will find familiar, but ranges more widely harmonically, moving into a variety of different keys as it passes the melody from lead to bass and finally to tenor. It increasingly explores both diatonic dissonance and chromatic harmonies as the emotional narrative becomes more troubled, evoking the poignancy of the lyric in both the shape of the lines and the way they rub up against each other.Vocal ranges:Tenor: E flat 4 - F5Lead: B flat 3 - C5Bari: B flat 3 - B flat 4Bass: E flat 3 - F4It is notated on two staves, treble and bass alta (i.e. bass clef sounding up an octave)
