Cradle Song (Two-Part Choir) is a brand new composition that’s perfect for the Christmas season. It was inspired by a text from the great 18th century English hymn writer Isaac Watts. In addition to 700 hymns, Watts wrote Joy to the World and is considered the father of the English hymn. In my piece I used a few of Watts' most attractive lines including, Heavenly blessings without number, gently falling on thy head, and omitted those referring to Horned oxen, cursed sinners and burning flames. Cradle Song incorporates lush modern keyboard harmonies in attractive piano interludes. Pianists may recognize subtle references to Chopin’s famous Prelude in D-flat, the Raindrop Prelude. To me, raindrops falling helped paint an emotional picture of heavenly blessings gently falling on the Christ child. Comfortable vocal ranges and many unison lines make the two-part treble version sing-able by young choirs and even two soloists. Cradle Song is available in multiple formats including SATB, SAB, in addition to this Two-Part Treble for small choirs.

This arrangement of Alfonso XII has been adapted for 2-part chorus and set to a piano accompaniment. This song tells a story about Alfonso XII, King of Spain from December 1874 until his death in November 1885. It is a song tale known in many Latin American countries. As is typical of folk songs, there are many popular variations and additional verses. English translation: Where are you going, Alfonso XII? Where are you going so sadly? I am looking for Mercedes because I lost her yesterday. Mercedes is already dead, and it's true because I saw her. Four dukes carried her through the streets of Madrid. The lanterns of the castle no longer want to light, Because Mercedes has died, and they are in mourning. Poor little Mercedes, she died like a flower. Dearest tells us a story about remembering love’s past, rambling the woodlands during the days of horse and carriage This setting of the old Gaelic love song Cailin mo rùin-sa is ethereal, as if seeing memories through a mist. Balquhidder is an imaginary tale of the early love between the famous Rob Roy MacGregor and his wife, Mary Helen. Rob Roy is sometimes called the Scottish Robin Hood. So, a lovely lady Mary suits the story quite well. Highland Laddie tells the tale of the Jacobite Risings between 1688 and 1746. Through the song we see the Highland soldier marching off in his bonnet blue, tartan plaid, and highland trousers. Laddie comes to a near frenzied ending as a glorious salute to all Scottish Regiments. Also available for SATB, TTBB, and SSAA choirs. Orchestra and Band settings of the accompaniment coming soon.
