The lullaby Bye-lo, Baby-o functions as a sol-mi-la ostinato alongside the humorous Appalachian folk song, What’ll I Do with the Baby-o. Gaudette’s adapted lyrics offer ways to soothe a baby who won’t go to sleep:   Wrap him up in calico, send him to his mammy-o.  Tickle his chin, wiggle his toes, blow on his belly and touch his nose.  Dance him north, dance him south, put a little binky in his mouth. Composer’s Note - Growing into meOn a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. It certainly will be for me.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Choosing Our Own AdventureCanberra in the 1980s was a pretty fun place to be for a little kid. Well, i liked it. Playtime was very outdoorsy, with Lake Burley Griffin and other large tracts of bushland only twenty minutes from a​ nywhere​, it was easy to be somewhere beautiful pretty quickly. There was lots of bike riding, roller skating, tree climbing, skipping stones on the water, and running through waist high piles of autumn leaves. The change of seasons is so colourfully vivid in Canberra, it just makes you want to be outside to taste it!I’ve tried to capture that playfulness in this song which I dedicate to my big brother James with whom I spent so many of those childhood weekends. The name of the piece pays tribute to a series of books we loved to read, Choose Your Own Adventure​.-- Sally Whitwell

Note from the arranger: One of the things that I’ve always loved about this song is how it sort of modernizes the language of the life of Jesus as its portrayed in the Bible.  There’s nothing about supernatural angels of the Lord who frighten shepherds abiding in the field and, instead, it begins with the story of a husband and wife grappling with the birth of a child; the Last Supper sounds like a gathering of friends at a going-away party.  The Jesus in this song is a very human one and, having sung a lot of sacred repertoire over the years, that’s a side of him I don’t feel like we talk about very much.  The original song features a lot of speak singing over a gentle guitar riff, and I’ve attempted to preserve a bit of that feel with the piano.

Pop A Cappella Academy, for one of our Kids Ensemble. It is fun and catchy, and an extended arrangement has also been performed by our Adult Classes (SATB). VOCAL LAYOUT:The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. The Vocal Percussion (Beatboxing) should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with much of the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Mmm's / Dmm's, etc).RHYTHM & BASS:This Beatboxing part is suitable for beginners, and is made up of groupings of patterns.
