From 2011 to 2020 Joanna was the music director and head vocal teacher at Broadway Arts Centre. She performs frequently in local festivals and clubs with her six-voice folkgrass ensemble North of Queen and also sings with Toronto’s premiere rock choir newchoir. Joanna is an award-winning songwriter (Songdoor, Song of the Year, ISSA) and arranger and her works have been performed by choirs and bands all over the world. Trained formally in voice, piano, and oboe throughout her younger years, Joanna has sung in (and lead) various choirs, performed with the New Westminster Musical Theatre Guild, and teaches Musical Theatre, piano, and voice at her studio in Toronto, Ontario.

The text comes from a letter that Robert Inglis wrote in 1915 to the Commissioner of Pensions asking for a raise in his civil war pension. In providing information apparently requested by the Pension office, Robert details many events in his early years, adding a fair bit of sarcasm and wit to the narrative. The composer edited the content to fit into more of a strophic sea-shanty style. The piano part offers a sense of ocean waves as well as a few popular tunes of the day as commentary on the story. When he and his sister were in boarding school in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, he witnessed a historic yacht race. The following year, they sailed across the Atlantic with the family of their father’s third wife. Life with his stepmother must have been unbearable, because he “went to sea� time after time to escape the unpleasantness she brought to bear. The final departure left him shipwrecked on Hatteras with drunken shipmates. He made his way to Maryland where, to his horror, he witnessed a slave auction. Sensing the tension and possibly inspired to action, he headed west to join the 20th Indiana Infantry. He later served in the 51st Pennsylvania, the Provost Guard, and the U. S. Navy. Note from the arranger: One of the things that I’ve always loved about this song is how it sort of modernizes the language of the life of Jesus as its portrayed in the Bible.  There’s nothing about supernatural angels of the Lord who frighten shepherds abiding in the field and, instead, it begins with the story of a husband and wife grappling with the birth of a child; the Last Supper sounds like a gathering of friends at a going-away party.  The Jesus in this song is a very human one and, having sung a lot of sacred repertoire over the years, that’s a side of him I don’t feel like we talk about very much.  The original song features a lot of speak singing over a gentle guitar riff, and I’ve attempted to preserve a bit of that feel with the piano.
