Another solid title from Bruno Mars, Middle School students love this piece! If you've worked with them, you know that they love heartache and broken relationships, so this song definitely delivers. I kept this one very simple and it was just fun. Students really like and find accessible the easy alto harmonies throughout. There's definitely more of an opportunity to learn about dynamics and have a powerful moment in this piece than in most pop music, but make sure you have a big drop before the third verse - students love the feeling it gives them. The piece is also notated in cut time with swung eighths, so there are opportunities to teach some more complicated metric principles as well, though you can also easily ignore those details and keep it simple for a young group. The piano part is kept very simple throughout.

This fun musical retells the Christmas Story through the adventures of some time-travelling teens! In Just in Time for Christmas, a group of senior Sunday School students decide that they’re too old to take part in the Christmas pageant. While hiding from their Musical Director, they discover a mysterious machine that takes them on an epic adventure through space and time! Along the way, they encounter a number of biblical characters (including Isaiah, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, the Innkeeper, and the Shepherds) and learn that the Christmas Story is important and real. The musical features a flexible script with parts for every age group, allowing for maximum flexibility with age-range, cast size, and rehearsal time. Each part of the story is followed by an original song sung by the entire cast. Costumes, sets, and props are also minimal, and there are no scene changes, which allow this show to be staged in any space, including traditional church sanctuaries. Just in Time for Christmas features five original songs written and arranged for school-aged children by Joanna Mills. The songs are all set in an accessible range for young children, and feature simple tunes which are easy to learn. This package contains two versions of each song; an easy unison version (some with an optional easy descant or counterpoint harmonies on the final chorus), and a 2-part choir version, which features simple, easy-to-learn harmonies. This allows you to mix and match your arrangements to suit the abilities of your singers and your rehearsal time constraints. For those students who do not read music, the lyrics are included in the script. A Time to Rejoice! is a dramatic and poignant cantata for schools/children's choirs and piano (organ accompaniment also available) in which performers and audience embark on an exciting journey through time to witness the events of the first Easter.  The time machine is somewhat unreliable, adding humour to the story, and stops are made in the Garden of Eden and Bethlehem before arriving in Jerusalem for Palm Sunday and the events of the crucifixion.  The optional second parts greatly enhance the cantata and can be sung by a group of children or even an adult choir.

Whilst not a staged production, there is plenty of scope for acting in the roles of the Captains, and props such as tea lights for the opening procession, pilots' hats for the Captains and palm branches in the song The King is Coming.

A Time to Rejoice!  was premiered by St. Joseph's in the Park school, Hertingfordbury, UK on 17 March 2023.  Here are some comments from staff/parents:

Well-known English folk song, first published in 1889 about a group of friends who borrow an old horse to go to Widecombe fair. Research suggests that the characters in the song were real people and the events in the song took place in 1802. The song is also known by its old spelling: Widdicombe Fair or as Tom Pearce.
This is a simple but entertaining arrangement, with plenty of drama and fun, for two part women's choir and piano. Vocal harmonies are simple and there is plenty of repetition.
Also available is a more challenging version for SSA choir and piano, and an a cappella version for SSAA choir.
