The initial conflict between them points out the two main themes of the story: (1) God sent His Son as the Lamb of God to pay the price for sin; and (2) Even in difficult times, God is still in control. The story ends with them at the manger seeing Christ just after He was born. The drama can be performed by only three people. They can sing the solo parts in the songs, or the children's choir and additional soloists can sing all of the music. Several of the songs have optional two-part harmony.
