The undisputed master of music for a December St. Lucia's Day celebration is the well known, well loved piece Santa Lucia. I do not seek to displace this lovely piece as part of the ancient St. Lucia's Day tradition, but rather I choose to add another option to be used as a processional, service piece, or concert work.

This piece is written simply, divided into two parts for children's performance, and is short by design; the entire song is under two minutes long. I have kept the harmonies at a minimum. Most of the music is sung unison with just a couple of harmonic touches. The texture is: Group One, Group Two, Groups One and Two unison, Groups One and Two harmony. These four textures will help bring color to a mostly-unison performance.

This triumphant anthem for unison or two-part children's choir with flute obligato (optional) is written with the rhythmic verve and energy that characterize much of Jothen's writing. It provides an excellent opportunity to teach the art of syncopation. The accompaniment works as well with organ as piano. The piece is enhances by the flute obligato but can be done without it. This anthem is mainly for Easter day - a declaration of God's great gift of salvation and freedom - but references scripture in the Christmas and Epiphany sections of the lectionary.
