This is a bit of an oddity, admittedly, but in the event that you have a virtuoso pianist and a treble choir performing together at Christmas, it could be just what you're looking for! Such was the case in 2016, when Vancouver pianist Jane Coop was the guest of Elektra Women's Choir at their annual Chez Nous holiday concert. I created this piece in order to have something on the programme that was both Christmassy and yet involved the full-on pianism that would typically be on display at one of Jane's solo recitals. Somehow I managed to combine the melodies of not one but two familiar carols (Joy to the World and O Thou Joyful Day) with the flamboyant filigree and wild chromatics -- joyful in their own right! -- of Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No.8. The result, according to Elektra's artistic director, Morna Edmundson, is a fun, bright, and somewhat dizzying experience!

The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boy’s hand shot up straight away and he said: “Tell you what I don’t wanna build: a stupid snowman!� He suggested we build a rocket instead. So that’s what we did. It’s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. It’s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). While the piece is not exactly “a walk in the park vocally and harmonically for young people, their performance was magnificent.Several sections of the accompaniment are syncopated, and this can cause a bit of difficulty for the singers, but the rhythm is quite effective, as are the soprano “divisi sections where the harmony becomes three-part. Gretchen am Spinnrade (D. 118, Op. 2) is one of Schubert’s first, most successful, and most widely recognized accomplishments in the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, but the breadth and compositional maturity of this 1814 example are an early indication of his gift for the form. The text is a strophic poem taken from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Faust, depicting a scene in which Gretchen, sitting at the spinning wheel (spinnrade), daydreams about Faust, a man with whom she is infatuated though she has only just met him and barely knows him. Schubert employs the first stanza as a refrain, repeating the text (“My peace is gone/My heart is heavy/I will never again find them�) to heighten the dramatic intensity as Gretchen becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her feelings. The piano accompaniment, with its relentless sixteenth notes in the right hand, depicts both Gretchen’s accumulating madness and the perpetual motion of the spinning wheel. Sixty-five measures pass before the pattern breaks, when Gretchen is so overcome by her emotions that she stops spinning while imagining Faust’s kiss.
