This delicate and gentle Shaker tune from 1834 is appropriate for weddings, Maundy Thursday services, and any time we gather to celebrate love. There are several beautiful choral arrangements available, but I was unable to find any setting for solo voice and piano. This arrangement, available in three ranges, gives vocal soloists the opportunity to sing it as well.

Here’s a fresh high-voice arrangement of the classic gospel song written by bass-baritone George Beverly Shea. It is appropriate for any setting where sacred music is welcomed. This arrangement is also available on this site for medium voice. Shea wrote the tune for “I’d Rather Have Jesus� at age 23. He’d been offered a well-paying job as a singer on NBC’s Your Hit Parade, and he was struggling with whether to choose a secular singing career or to stick with singing in churches and on Christian radio. He turned down the job offer, stuck with sacred music, and eventually took a role as the main vocalist with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusades. “I’d Rather Have Jesus� became his signature tune. It was featured on his first release from RCA records, and because of his role with Billy Graham, it is thought that he sang live before more people than anyone else in history.

The anonymous song Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel is one of many African-American spirituals that borrow biblical imagery to talk about hope for freedom from oppression. The classic arrangement of this spiritual by H. T. Burleigh will no doubt remain a standard, but I hope the rhythmic variety, jazz harmonies, and big finish of this version will add spice to your church and recital repertoire.  This arrangement (which tops out at a high G#) will also be available in medium-high, medium- and low-voice editions.

Here is a fresh arrangement for solo voice and piano of Listen to the Lambs, one of the most hauntingly beautiful spirituals in the African-American heritage. The song is best known in a choral arrangement by Nathaniel Dett, but it cries out for solo treatment as well. This is a high-voice arrangement. Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-influenced R&B hit, People Get Ready was named by Rolling Stone magazine as the 24th greatest song of all time, and it was dubbed by Martin Luther King, Jr, the unofficial anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The song has been covered by top-tier singers from Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, and the Staple Singers, to Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. I decided to use it in a church context during the season of Advent, a time of expectation and getting ready. Here is the high-voice version of the arrangement I performed in December 2022.
