Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-influenced R&B hit, People Get Ready was named by Rolling Stone magazine as the 24th greatest song of all time, and it was dubbed by Martin Luther King, Jr, the unofficial anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The song has been covered by top-tier singers from Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, and the Staple Singers, to Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. I decided to use it in a church context during the season of Advent, a time of expectation and getting ready. Here is the high-voice version of the arrangement I performed in December 2022. The original secular lute song, Gia risi, was composed in Italian, with a basso continuo accompaniment.  It was first published in 1619 in Libro terzo di villanelle, No.2.  This modern arrangement is for soprano or tenor voice and keyboard and hopes to awaken a new appreciation of Kapsperger’s genius.  A variety to the accompaniment, and embellishment to the vocal line for each verse of this strophic composition, provides a practical solution for modern recital hall performance.  This piece is a fine introduction to the early Baroque style. This arrangement grew out of such an experience: a gifted singer & her talented pianist showed up at a school with the most generic of printed arrangements. Thus this attempt to create an ensemble of two - performing a tune recognized by all. All it requires is the singers art & soul.
