The Easter Egg Rock is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for one Oboe and one Clarinet.

The Easter Egg Rock is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Modern Rock music has its origins in Rock’n’Roll, with the first use of the word in 1951 by an Ohio DJ.  The first big hit was Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clockin 1955, but other artists such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent and Little Richard all have strong claims to being the first Rock’n’Roll artist.

The Easter Egg Rock is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. Kandel’s Hora is a Jewish dance tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Clarinet.

Kandel’s Hora was written and named after Harry Kandel. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.

Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. With a performance time of three minutes, this version of Kandel’s Hora is perfect for concert performances, both formal and informal. The Christmas Song is better known to many by its first line Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. The song was written on a hot summer day in 1945 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells who were trying to cool down by composing a wintry lyric. It was first recorded by Nat King Cole the following year and was an instant hit. Nat King Cole revisited the song several times in his career and it has also been recorded by just about every noteworthy popular artist since, from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney to The Jacksons, and many more. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Clarinet.

Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. Total performance time is around four minutes.
