At the suggestion of my colleague, pianist Tricia Dawn Williams, I started work on a piece for double bass and piano for a special concert she had planned in Malta with bassist Gjorgji Cincievski.Upon beginning work on the piece I had a bit of difficulty reconciling the huge sonority and weight of tone the instrument with the piano. The more I pondered this issue, the more it pointed to thinking about the sound of the instruments in a slightly different way from other instruments. The double bass has a spectrum of sound that ranges from so low one can almost feel it more than hear it, to a quite nasal, somewhat sweet ‘head voice’ in the upper range.Because of this, the notion of some earthen, eruptive sound took hold in my imagination and this led also to the conception of many of the features of the work: vibrant low trills and fast syncopated rhythms all offset by a central slow section that is the still moments between two eruptive outer sections.I completed the work in Cincinnati, Ohio between September and December, 2012 and it has since been played in Malta, the USA and Australia by Gjorgji Cincievski and Robert Nairn.

The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) uses the aeolian mode. It was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub. The opening section locks measures of 3/4 and 6/8 together, working in tandem to propel the melody forward. The middle of the piece keeps the same pulse, but uses a jaunty melody to move first into 4 and then, with increasing frequency, measures of 2 and 3. The opening motif reappears before the piece once again pushes into the the lively second theme as it bounces towards its playful conclusion. All three were composed between 1870 and 1877, then collected and published in 1878 under the title Trois Mélodies. The poem for Après un rêve was loosely adapted from an anonymous Italian text by Romain Bussine. It describes, in the form of a dream, the imaginary flight of two lovers who are head over heels in love, although the last verse brings the dreamer inexorably back to harsh reality as dawn is breaking.
