The text was written by Samuel Stennett in 1787 and the tune, popularized by the hymnbook The Sacred Harmony, was written by M. Durham in 1835. This original song tells a fairy tail in the style of a Celtic folk song. Both the story and the tune are wholly original and were composed as part of a music production class that Mark participated in during the spring of 2022. This song tells the story of a young boy's adventure in the woods, his skepticism towards what the old folks say, and the results of his failure to listen to them. This piece by Mark R Lewis is arranged for SATB ensemble. All parts get the melody at some point and there are several duets between voices parts throughout the piece. Additionally the accompaniment voices switch between homophonic harmonies and arpeggiating chords several times for increased complexity and interest. The instrumental parts consist of vibraphone, piano, bass guitar, and floor tom parts. Any mellow metallophone would be an appropriate substitute for the vibraphone and the bass guitar part can be played on almost any bass instrument. The optional floor tom could be substituted with any other lower, resonant drum available but should not be a short, sharp sound. All that said, both the vibraphone and bass guitar parts are mostly doubled in the piano or vocal lines so groups that do not have access to those instruments should still be able to perform this piece without concern. This piece is also available for Vocal Trio w/ Mixed Ensemble and the sound files sampled here are from that arrangement. This SATB divisi arrangement by Mark R Lewis imitates the tradition of Latin plainsong but is fully modern in conception. While this arrangement is not too extreme in terms of notes and rhythms, it will stretch the limits of many singers' vocal ranges and incorporates some complex harmonies. ​The arrangement incorporates a pedal note drone that can be played on any instrument. There is an optional hand drum part. While this arrangement does work with only the drone accompaniment, Mark has also published string orchestra and woodwind ensemble settings that work wonderfully as accompaniment to the vocal setting. On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.This arrangement is intended to be performed by SATB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the basses and alto should be able to sing down to a D2 or an F3 respectively (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

Pachelbel's grand Chorale Partita with Seven Variations in G is based on the 17th Century Protestant German hymn tune Alle Menschen müssen sterben (All of Mankind is Mortal) by Jakob Hintze. The original form of the work was in C major with eight variations, composed for Organ.  Bach, being greatly influenced by Pachelbel, later took up the melody for use in one of his Cantatas. Keith Terrett has done a great job arranging these elaborate variations of about 6 minutes in length for a Tuba Ensemble quintet of advanced performers.
