Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844381). For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment.  The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies.

Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Irish/Scottish folk singing is a wonderful tradition spanning hundreds of years and includes subjects ranging from romance to resistance. Many songs were created and subsequently preserved in pubs and other informal gatherings.  Will You Go, Lassie, Go, also known as Wild Mountain Thyme, is basically a love song. The imagery comes alive, however, if one has had the pleasure of seeing in person the blooming heather (another alternate title) mentioned in the lyrics. When in bloom, it blankets hillsdises with it's distinctive purple hue. Heather was also used extensively in the process of thatching, roofs, a process that continues to this day. Though more difficult to work with than some other plants, there is a movement to preserve heather thatching. This arrangement is for SATB choir with piano accompaniment and features a female soloist at the beginning and the end. Your choir will love singing this accessible arrangement.

I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days.      Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories.      I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see.       Que Sera, Sera.
