Lifting our own sights heavenward, our love is refined.
Sore lepers were made clean with new skin so pristine.
He can also cleanse our souls when on Him we lean.

He is a God of miracles; He sees our faith each day.
As we obey in reverence, He’s mighty to save.
We’ll offer heartfelt prayers and trust Him with our cares.

Rock and stone washed clean with time No longer bear the stain Of blood our Savior shed for man, By whom the Lord was slain. Nature wept to hide the deed. Wind would scour His pain, To leave behind a promise true That we shall live again. Far too is Gethsemane, Hidden 'midst the trees, Where he suffered for our sins, Fallen on His knees. There he drank the bitter cup, With none His pain to ease. The garden mutely heard His groans Dispersed upon the breeze. Ev'ry bough in reverence bent To His grief unseen, In honor of His sacrifice, That man could now be clean. Christ is not so far away, Nor His loving care. While teaching composition at Dordt College, I had the distinct pleasure of working with the administrators of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra. As a result of that wonderful relationship, I was approached to write a new fanfare for this concert to feature organist Marylou Wielenga.

This new fanfare, set in a simple ABA form, includes a setting of the hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, which is presented exclusively in the organ. Counter melodies and motifs are introduced throughout the work in the brass, woodwinds, and strings which are tossed around the orchestra culminating in a presentation set against the hymn presented one last time in the organ. God is praised triumphantly through brilliant brass fanfares and sparkling woodwind flourishes, all grounded by organ hymn.

Lauda is gratefully dedicated to Marylou Wielenga and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Stanichar, conductor.

The work was written for Bath Spa University's Chamber Choir. It was first performed on the 4th December 2014, as part of a Carol Service in Bath Abbey, England.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
