The Hope of My Heart is a poem written by John McCrae in the early 20th century. McCrae was a physician, and often saw children who passed away due to disease and other medical complications. This poem reflects the grief and faithful optimism the he experienced while observing these children dying and hopefully moving on to be with God.

This piece is intended for an 8-part mixed choir at the high school or collegiate level. The run time of the piece is 4:25.

The Priestly Blessing, also known as the Aaronic Blessing or the Raising of the Hands was originally given to Israel's priests (Aaron's descendants) in Numbers 6:23-27 so that they could place the Lord's Name on the children of Israel and the Lord would then bless them. This is a collection of blessings set for SATB choir.  An organ may be used to provide a discrete drone for A Harvest Blessing, while an optional short introduction and colla parte accompaniment have been provided for Aaronic Blessing.  All three may, of course, be performed unaccompanied. 


While united by the theme of benediction, these pieces are distinct in style.  Harvest Blessing refers to the overtone series, while An Irish Blessing makes use of “mitigated planing�, in which parts moving as block chords are offset by contrary motion, holds (non-traditional suspensions) and other devices.  Aaronic Blessing is the longest piece in the collection, and features a variety of contrapuntal textures, although it is essentially highly tuneful in character.

“The Loveliest Night of the Year� was first published in 1888 by the Mexican composer and violinist, Juventino P. Rosas, originally titled “Sobre las olas� (Over the Waves). Generations grew up hearing this tune played on (perhaps) a WurliTzer 153 Band Wagon that accompanied their carousel ride in many a fairground on a sunny afternoon. In 1950 the music was adapted by Irving Aaronson and Paul Francis Webster and featured in the MGM biographical film “The Great Caruso�. It was later recorded by Mario Lanza, thus making it an ‘Italian-American favorite’. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:00+- This tune is an excellent opening number for an outdoor summer’s evening community engagement concert, or the theme song for a concert about opera and/or opera singers, or a performance about opera’s connection to it’s sister art form – film.
