Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.973048 Composed by Francis Kayali. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 19 pages. Francis Kayali #6230277. Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973048). The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.894406 Composed by African American Spiritual. Arranged by Zack Richards. Christian,Christmas,Easter,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 8 pages. Zack Richards #5722811. Published by Zack Richards (A0.894406). There is a Balm in Gilead references both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The Balm of Gilead is seen as a spiritual medicine that can heal sinners and bring salvation through Jesus Christ. With this arrangement, I tried to create a simple, yet interesting setting of the well-known hymn. Each verse has a slightly different style, but there is still a unity in the general harmonic and melodic feel of the piece. This is an arrangement suited for almost any church choir looking to add some variety to a common hymn.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.924271 Composed by Z. M. Barnes. Christian,Christmas,Gospel,Jazz,Spiritual. Octavo. 9 pages. ©Z.M. Barnes & Rising Lark Music #3363789. Published by ©Z.M. Barnes & Rising Lark Music (A0.924271). Mary Had a Little Baby is a traditional spiritual that came from the gospel music of the African-American community.       With its infectious rhythm and easy, jazz-like accompaniment, it can fit into the community concert, church service, or other occasions.       It can also be interpreted  with a larger meaning, slower, more varied, allowing the listeners to think of Mary rocking her little lamb now ushered into a dangerous world.  To the question, What you gonna call that baby? comes the affirmation: King Emmanuel.         A spiritual carol that will be appreciated by everyone.

SATB choir and Piano - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.1.3610-E Composed by Kyle Pederson. African American Heritage. Instrument part. 22 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3610-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3610-E). English. From the arranger, Kyle Pederson To me, spirituals are the most powerful type of music. Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.” The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.” In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. You can read more about the phenomenal work ISAIAH is doing at isaiahmn.org.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.965300 Composed by Boyd E. Gibson. Arranged by Apex Music Company. Contemporary,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 7 pages. Boyd Eugene Gibson #5319441. Published by Boyd Eugene Gibson (A0.965300). This African American spiritual uses the image of asking Jesus to come so close to us when we pray that he is pictured as laying his head in our window to hear us pray. This arrangement builds on this through the use of canons that are not exactly identical to show the personal nature of our prayers and relationship. It also employs text from Psalm 86:1-3 which implores God to bow down to hear our prayer. The Psalm setting is in the style of chant and organum, which adds a truly emotional element to the music.
