When in the dark with vision obscured,
My prayer is answered from God’s peace conferred:
“Be not afraid; oh, be not dismayed.
Jesus is near thee; for thy soul He paid.�

I am a cov’nant chi-ld of God.
His holy Son draws my honor and laud.
I feel Christ’s love; to Him I am bound.
Fearlessness comes from his merited crown.

I am an heir of Abraham’s seed;
I will be blessed for each cov’nant I heed.
I can be strong in these latter days.
Courage will come with Christ’s infinite aid.

I will trust God and his Son of Man.
I know I can for I know whose I am.
I will hold tight to heaven’s sure rod,
For I am a cov’nant child of God.

I am a child in God’s family.
He knows my name and He calls me to be
Humble and bold, and in Him confide.
Jesus has promised He’ll be by my side.

I can proclaim my legacy acquired
Because of my Savior’s most holy desire.
I’ll not forget my heritage bought,

“I am who ye seek today; let other lives be spared.�
Roman soldiers, drenched in spite, voiced threat’nings very clear.
Then Peter, with his sword unsheathed, removed a Roman’s ear.

Jesus gently touched that ear for Malchus to be healed.
‘Stead of using pow’r to live, pure mercy was His shield.
Showing Father’s love for all, He walked a diff’rent path
By granting miracles to each when met with bitter wrath.

Standing in for Peter, too, pure Jesus healed this wound,
Saving him from punishment and further mortal gloom.
Then the captors took Him hence to die for all men’s sins,
Yet, He would live triumphantly . . . the miracle is Him.

“I am He� He claims to all, for Jesus is our Lord.
“O, I am who ye seek today. Come closer, I implore.�
“I am He; I’m called the Christ. I live so all can see
My heav’nly pow’rs displayed with love and mercy. I am He.�.

Behold, I Am the Light

“Behold, I am the light; I have set an example for you.� (3 Nephi 18:16)

Storms of darkness may descend like a winter sky.
Clouds of gloom may dominate; sun may be disguised.
Walking step by step with Me through mortality
Lessens shadows flawlessly; trusting is my plea:

Behold, I am the Light . . . a light that has no end.
I will lend my power; I will be thy Friend.
I can brighten ev’ry path like a blazing torch.
I can lighten loads because Father is my source.

Behold, I am God’s Light; His love shines through Me.
Never to be darkened, feel this love and see.
I will faithful be . . . trust Me perfectly.

Days of trial might seem long like the darkest night.
Tests of patience may endure ev’n in Father’s sight.
Trusting in each morning sun is a blessed choice,
for bright truth will ever shine. Hear my faithful voice:

Behold, I am the Light . . . a light that has no end.

♫ The claim “I Am the Light of the World� came from Jesus’ encounter with a man born blind. It is also found in another context – possibly at the Feast of Lights when the Temple was illuminated with a plethora of lights. With electric lights, we are used to seeing many, sometimes intense lights at night. But night light was limited in the first century to oil lamps. Light in the dark represents visibility (understanding, knowledge) safety (confidence), and the ability to navigate.

♫ On the night of His arrest, Jesus told the disciples that He was going away, leaving them, and they could not follow Him. 

♫ He further explained that they knew the road He was taking. Philip asked His destination so he could figure out the route. 

♫ But His claim “I Am the Road, the Truth, and the Life� was not speaking of a destination with latitude and longitude coordinates. Jesus is plainly claiming that He alone is the only path to God, the path to truth, and the path to eternal life.

The Good Shepherd is there with his loving care;

♫ “I Am the Good Shepherd� was announced to the disciples at the same time Jesus claimed “I Am the Gate of the Sheep.� Both claims rely on the image of a shepherd and his sheep, but have a slightly different emphasis. 

♫ The main point of this claim is the self-sacrifice of the shepherd due to his love and concern for his sheep. There were many religious authorities in Judea claiming to represent God. 

♫ Jesus alone was capable of paying mankind’s sin debt and concerned enough to offer His life for the sheep.

♫ Jesus makes it clear here that those who put their trust in Jesus Christ will be raised from the dead in the last judgment. Those who are alive will enter the Kingdom era with transformed bodies that cannot die. 

♫ Raising Lazarus from the dead was so threatening to the religious establishment that it caused the chief priest to plot the deaths of both Jesus and Lazarus.

♫ The claim “I Am the Gate� is based from the construction of the ancient sheepfold. The sheepfold often had no physical gate. The shepherd would bring the sheep back to the fold after a day searching for food and water. He would sleep in the doorway of the fold, becoming the actual gate. A wild animal would have to attack him to be able to get to the sheep. A thief would likely go over the wall to steal a sheep.

The poem sometimes called I Am due to its repetition of the phrase, hence the title of the present composition. Is the poem inspired? The tetragrammaton Hebrew name for God, which transliterates roughly to YHWH, means I am that I am. There is something almost mystical about this poem as it was poet’s first one. Mary Elizabeth Frye was an orphan who had never received a formal education. In 1932, she and her spouse offered shelter from the Holocaust to a young Jewish woman named Margaret Schwarzkopf. When Margaret received news that her mother had died in Germany, the distressed houseguest told Mary in all hopelessness that she had never had the chance to stand by my mother’s grave and shed a tear. Mary then wrote the poem on a torn-off section of a brown paper bag. She said the words just came to her..
