This is the  Vocal Score of William Hawley's Three American Folk Hymns, commissioned by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati, Earl Rivers, Director. The World Premiere took place, with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, in Memorial Hall, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 22, 2009, Earl Rivers, Conductor. What Wondrous Love Is This is an American folk hymn that became popular during the early 1800s. It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.

This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.

This haunting folk tune is classified as Type I, which are hymns sung to settings of traditional ballad tunes. This classification was devised by Phillips Barry (1880–1937), who was a pioneering Early American folk hymn specialist and folk tune collector.
The melody of O Tell Me Where the Dove Has Flown is in the Dorian mode. It is repeated five times in this edition, making the design of the entire work strophic in structure. The text authorship of the verses is unknown, rendering them as a traditional text. This setting includes five of the surviving six ABAB rhymed verses.
This work was first performed in 1965 by the Boston University Marsh Chapel Choir conducted by Dr. Max Miller in a worship service. Duration: 4:45.

The tune for Star in the East first appears in print in The Southern Harmony collection, but is well attested as an American Folk Hymn. The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The Baritone soloist should be a well experienced intermediate singer and the bass line is very active at times, but the choir and woodwind parts should be performable by most intermediate groups. A perfect choral accompaniment to The Last Post, this iconic American hymn Blessed Assurance is scored for SATB choir and trumpet in Bb. The concertato style arrangement provides a dignified and fitting musical setting in counterpoint with The Last Post. (Verse three can be heard on the digital audio clip). The choral parts are not difficult and the combination of these two classic tunes evokes a powerful emotional response, especially in the second verse ('visions of rapture now burst on my sight') where the soprano part takes on a descant-like role. This musical arrangement is well suited to both sacred and secular occasions where a memorial musical component is required.
