Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1255595 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Octavo. 11 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #849108. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1255595). Here’s a new arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries.  In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. John Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years.  Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SATB arrangement for choir and piano is within easy technical reach of most amateur choirs. The top soprano note is G just above the treble staff. The highest alto note is the C above middle C and the tenor and bass parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

The singers must have a command of breath control, of keeping the tonal center under control, and in an ability to sing in a dissonant chord. The song's duration is comfortable for concert or competition. Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Listen to the Lambs is scored for mixed unaccompanied chorus with solo soprano part and was originally published by G. Schirmer in 1914. It became one of his most famous choral works and was featured in The Oxford Book of Spirituals and Choral Music: A Norton Historical Anthology. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719700 Composed by American Folk Song. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Folk. Octavo. 6 pages. Curtis Hanson #3358721. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719700). This beloved American folk song is here set in a new arrangement for SATB voices and piano. The first verse is for unison male voices, the second verse becomes somewhat more independent for all four parts, the third verse is in a loose canon form, and the final verse is again more independent with progressively closer harmony as the piece evolves. Thus it would provide a good challenge for the young choir but should be accessible for ensembles with at least modest abilities. It would make a wonderful addition to any school or community program.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.955886 Composed by Traditional 19th century English Shanty. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. Contemporary,Folk. 18 pages. Scott S. Stewart #6673463. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.955886). Bound for the Rio Grande was one of the favorite sea shanties among outward bound British and American ships during the 19th century. And the Rio Grande referred to in this song is that one in the southernmost part of Brazil known as Rio Grande do Sul.  A song handed down through oral (aural) means by the rough and tough salty sailors from the great days of sail produced many variations to text, temperament and purpose. Yet the common denominator in all versions is saying good-bye to loved ones left behind in order to pursue the dreams of adventure and riches. This rollicking setting is scored for 4-part SATB (optional bass solo) ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:08+-
