In 1855, British musician William Hayman Cummings adapted Felix Mendelssohn's secular music from Festgesang to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing written by Charles Wesley.[10] Wesley envisioned the song being sung to the same tune as his Easter song Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,[11] and in some hymnals that tune is included for Hark! The Herald Angels Sing along with the more popular Mendelssohn-Cummings tune.[12]

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing was regarded as one of the Great Four Anglican Hymns and published as number 403 in The Church Hymn Book (New York and Chicago, 1872).[13]

In Britain, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing has popularly been performed in an arrangement that maintains the basic original William H. Cummings harmonisation of the Mendelssohn tune for the first two verses, but adds a soprano descant and a last verse harmonisation for the organ in verse three by Sir David Willcocks. This arrangement was first published in 1961 by Oxford University Press in the first book of the Carols for Choirs series. For many years it has served as the recessional hymn of the annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at King's College Chapel, Cambridge.[14] wikipedia

Chosen of God, a virgin so fair
Was blessed from on high, a Son she would bear,
And call His name Jesus, for He was the One;
His life to offer, Thy will be done.
Angels came singing, sent from above
Declaring glad tidings, our Father’s love;
Shepherds and wise men would reverently bend
For Jesus was born, the Savior of men.

Women did come, their spices prepared;
Still grieving the loss of life thus not spared.

“Angels Singing,� is based on the carol “Angels We Have Heard on High.� This new arrangement opens with shepherds (Tenor and Baritone soli) hearing angel voices, “o’er the mountains, guided by a Holy light.� A few angels (women’s voices) sing in the distance. The carol now shifts to full chorus. Often, the men portray the shepherds, and the women sing as angels.
The Clarinet plays a featured role,  enhancing the message of the lyrics. Duration: 4:30.

The interesting and easy play on the word gloria between triple and duple meters lends a feeling of a multiple angelic host. The first four notes of the piece become a sweeping, recurring refrain, soaring upward like the angels themselves each time the title words appear.
