With a text taken from Emily Brontë's poem, The Night is Darkening Round Me, this setting represents an individual who is feeling increasingly trapped and helpless in their situation, and could even depict feelings of depression. Even the key changes in the work bring the listener through a full cycle and sets them up to repeat this spiral forever. Unlike some of my other works, this work is not intended to be uplifting, but is instead an ernest acknowledgement of the pain some people endure. This work is written for SATB choir (a cappella) and is approximately 3 minutes in duration. The choral parts are largely diatonic and should be accessible to most audiences/ensembles. Stewart (A0.1033880). “O Death, rock me asleep�: The lament of Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of King Henry the VIIIth, is essentially a Tudor-era poem inspired (perhaps attributed) by/to her last days in the Tower of London while awaiting execution. She was convicted on charges of high treason, adultery and incest, and sentenced to be beheaded. The authorship of this dirge is entirely speculative; yet William Shakespeare quotes it, and Henry Purcell uses the same funeral ostinato a 100 years later. A nod to Voices of Music (Early Music Ensemble) and their gutsy scholarship regarding the B-flat/B-natural controversy. This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with keyboard accompaniment. Johnson Gao made the new lyrics with playing (exploration), sleeping (nursing the brain), eating (get nutrition for growth) and mother’s love. He composed a new lullaby with 2/4 rhythms.
