Sometimes the song of a single voice, over time, evolves into a needed chorus of many. Such is Joni Mitchell’s anthem to activism “The Fiddle and the Drum� (1969).  Originally an anti-Vietnam-war protest song, the song has since been recorded 42 times, and counting, because it inspires us to “remember all the good things ‘we’ are… and because we have all come to fear the beating of ‘your’ drum.�  This arrangement is scored for 8-part [SSAATTBB occasional divisi] chorus, with a very minimal piano part added for percussion-purposes only; essentially the piece is sung a cappella. The ‘piano’ part is actually an interpretation of a timpani and bass drum [2 players] accompaniment which is included with the score.  Performance time 3:48+- Note: this arrangement was conceived with large choral ensemble with mature voices in mind.  The registers are extreme for the bass and alto sections, but doable when building the overall sound of the ensemble and adjusting dynamic levels of the other voices.

Though still a challenge, especially with the optional vocal soli, this Conniff-themed edition has been adapted from a more difficult version previously performed by Vocalogy on their 2005 Distilled release. The piece opens with a pulsating rhythm section figure as pianist, bassist, and drummer enter one by one. The wonderful moments of tension have been maintained beneath Rachmaninoff's soaringly romantic melody, and the wordless vocal provides an ethereal quality. With the optional soli, this is an Advanced level arrangement. There is room for improvising regardless of whether or not the soli is performed and, with no soli, this is an Advanced Intermediate arrangement.   Included individual piano, bass, and drum parts play from individual parts with chord symbols, slashes, and rhythmic notation. This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. The arrangement, which makes prominent use of sharp ninth chords during the head, is a great teaching tool for basses and altos in any vocal jazz ensemble!
