There is a strong and enduring relationship that has been forged between the Roman Catholic Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary and St. Louis, and the Episcopal Church of St. Michael & St. George in St. Louis, Missouri. Each season, the monks visit and sing Vespers at the church and, in turn, the Choir of the Church of St. Michael & St. George travels to the Abbey to sing Evensong. This setting of the evening canticles was composed for one such visit. The stunning acoustics of the Abbey Church are captured fully by the its slow harmonic motion and expansive writing.

Selected as a ï¬nalist in the 2019 Ithaca College Choral Festival and premiered there as part of the festival. This piece received its Midwest premiere at the ACDA North/North Central regional conference in 2020, performed by Roosevelt High School, directed by Robyn Starks Holcomb. The text of the piece is addressed to anyone facing struggles—and it presents an honest afï¬rmation that those struggles are real. Rather than deny the existence of problems or pain, the listener is encouraged to “lean into†the hardship, to name it—and to thereby reduce its power. Textually and musically, the listener is presented with the metaphor of a tree—being whipped by the wind—but built to bend in that wind and ultimately withstand the pressure-ï¬lled gales. The power of community is also afï¬rmed—as the listener is encouraged to walk alongside—to bend along with—their neighbor.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The “Benedictus†is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic “Hosanna†follows. The “Agnus Dei†is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the “miserere,†the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the “Gloria†returns. That same motif continues into the “dona nobis pacem,†as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, “Pacem.†Duration 7:33.
