Variety is the name of the game with this one. A hard swinging 12/8 shuffle take it on through the surprise ending that again references The Planets. Features solos for trumpet and trombone. English. Psalms 18:1-3; Ephesians 2:20.

A big, fun anthem for SATB choir and organ, this works its way up to two full verses of WESTMINSTER ABBEY, the last of which can use the congregation. All the celebratory bases are covered, from the organ fanfares and choir declamatory pronouncements, to the Alleluias which are between the verses and at the end of the piece. The choir parts are easy and the result is unrestrained joyfulness.

English, Latin.

A sprightly organ part supports accessible choral writing in this setting of the familiar tune. The macaronic text features Latin and English. Four verses, the third intended to be unaccompanied. The organ returns for the final verse, briefly forsaking its eighth note dance to provide big chords. The text O, that we were there! is repeated as the piece builds to its close.

Composed by Stacey V. Gibbs. African American Heritage. Instrument parts. 15 pages. MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music #50-0499-E. Published by MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music (MQ.50-0499-E).

English.

An original big choral take on this classic spiritual, this unaccompanied setting has divisi in all parts, a touch of chromaticism that is totally in character, and plenty of variation in texture, tempo, and mood. While your first thought might be for a large choir, the careful writing makes this completely possible for a small, skillful group as well. Despite being a solid new work, the familiar and fun parts of the text are all there with slight adaptations.

This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll.

One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them.

Somewhere beyond the sea

She’s there watching for me

…

It’s far beyond the stars

It’s near beyond the moon

And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan.

Performance Suggestions:

The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Composed by William B. Bradbury. Arranged by Forsyth Publishing. Sacred. Octavo. 4 pages. Forsyth Publishing #6285517. Published by Forsyth Publishing (A0.932713).

This 4:25 SATB arrangement starts soft then after extensive building by use of first phrase, the composition ends with a free harmonization with trumpets assisting by playing the melody during the free harmoniation and triplet embellishments to the ending.  This glorious composition would be appropriate to start a worship service, as an anthem and to close the worship experience.  The organ part is of very intermediate difficulty but sounds big.  Originally an organ solo, this arrangement requires substantial play of right hand playing two keyboards simultaneously.  Tune name:  He Leadeth Me.

SKU: A0.904857

Composed by Giancarlo Bigazzi, Giuseppe Beppe Dati, and Marco Falagiani. Arranged by Marco Borsoi. Pop. Octavo. 27 pages. Marco Borsoi #6167397. Published by Marco Borsoi (A0.904857).

60 e finale classicheggiante.

Composed by Francis Kayali. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 19 pages. Francis Kayali #6230277. Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973048).

The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well.

If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices.

The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah).

The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.
