Without a Song (which now holds a place in The Great American Songbook) was composed as early as 1922 by Vincent Youmans. Lyrics were added later by Billy Rose and Edward Eliscu.  It was published in 1929, and subsequently included in Youmans musical play Great Day. To today’s ear the lyrics speak about the power of music to brighten one’s day. The original lyrics however contain text that is considered derogatory and worthy of a study of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s to better understand popular American music and racial stereotypes of the early 20th century.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:20. An apt signature tune for choirs.

“Me and My Shadow� (1927) was composed by Dave Dreyer with lyrics by Billy Rose [and with Al Jolson along for the ride for popularizing it].  It has earned its rightful place in the Great American Songbook as one written/published during the Golden Age of the 20th century song writing, thus being an influential/important American popular song and jazz standard in the repertoire.  This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 4:10+-.

An uncomplicated arrangement for SATB voices plus Piano.
The harmonies are achievable by a community choir, but the piece is effective when sung by advanced ensembles too.
The piano part, which needs an advanced player, has been newly arranged specially for this version. It begins in a romantic Rachmaninov-like style, and then becomes jazzy.

Pérez Prado's recording of the song as an instrumental with his orchestra featuring trumpeter Billy Regis, whose trumpet sound would slide down and up before the melody would resume, was the most popular version in 1955, reaching number one for 10 weeks on the Billboard chart. It became a gold record.
