Score
Words by Emily Dickinson
Music by Richard deCosta

Because I could not stop for Death ā€“
He kindly stopped for me ā€“
The Carriage held but just Ourselves ā€“
And Immortality.

We slowly drove ā€“ He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility ā€“

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess ā€“ in the Ring ā€“
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain ā€“
We passed the Setting Sun ā€“

Or rather ā€“ He passed Us ā€“
The Dews drew quivering and Chill ā€“
For only Gossamer, my Gown ā€“
My Tippet ā€“ only Tulle ā€“

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground ā€“
The Roof was scarcely visible ā€“
The Cornice ā€“ in the Ground ā€“

Since then ā€“ 'tis Centuries ā€“ and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity ā€“

In the reclusive chambers of Emily Dickinson's 19th-century Massachusetts home, the haunting poem, 'Because I Could Not Stop for Death,' was conceived. Living much of her life in isolation, Dickinson's thoughts often ventured into the shadowlands of existence. This poem, published posthumously in 1890, offers a chilling reflection of her contemplation. The Grim Reaper, a timeless symbol, is portrayed as a carriage driver, guiding the reader through a somber journey that mirrors the ephemeral nature of life. Passing scenes of childhood innocence, maturity's labor, and the twilight of existence, it culminates in the cold embrace of the grave. Her words, etched in a gothic darkness, resonate with the uncertainties and fears of her time, transcending to speak to the eternal human condition.

Composed by Cam Moll. A Cappella,Chamber. 8 pages. Cam Moll #991189. Published by Cam Moll (A0.1408592).

This piece is a setting of the poem of the same name by Emily Dickinson for SATB choir unaccompanied. I chose this text because I was immediately drawn to its rich language and subtle elegance. I think that the poem is a beautiful representation of the complex nature of grief, and the effect that it has on the human experience. All of us have experienced the grief that comes with loss, and each of us deals with grief in our own ways. The vocal parts interact with each other in a variety of interesting ways and textures, in order to communicate this complex notion of grief. Featuring two soloists towards the end, the piece aims to allow the audience to reflect on the concept of grief, and is designed to be accessible for choral ensembles of varying experience levels.

Composed by James C. Vandenburg. New Age,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 16 pages. James C Vandenburg #3088313. Published by James C Vandenburg (A0.1003547).

Moving, dynamic, and dramatic! This moderate-difficulty SATB choral piece will give your choir and your audience a real 'goose-bump' experience. It follows the form of an Affirmative Prayer, opening with a meditation on the theme, Because I know that God is all there is, I know that God is all I am. and then moves into a flowing and dramatic (Broadway-esque) 3/4 section that builds the realization to an exciting climax before returning to a more meditative moment of release on the theme, I am, and so it is.

** This version is part of the collection, A New Thought for Choirs and includes a Vocals-Only version to save in printing, copying and rehearsal time.

I did not see the vision,

Nor dream a prophetā€™s dream,

I only saw the barren desert

Stretch forth upon the scene.

I was not there when Brighamā€™s cane

Touched the virgin ground

Naming the spot the Lord had shown

Where a temple would be found.

I did not hear the Lordā€™s own voice

As over ocean waves I tossed,

Nor spared the death of loved ones dear

As the vast plains I crossed.

I only felt the Holy Spirit

Telling me the work was true,

So I obeyed the prophetic words

Until my trek was through.

I helped dig the rocky soil

Before the foundation was laid

Then with shovel filled the gaping hole

Before Johnstonā€™s army stayed.

I did not see the templeā€™s spires

I only saw the walls,

I only shaped the granite stones

With hammer, chisel, maul.

I coaxed oxen through the mud

To move stones down a mountain side,

I watched our leaders grow old in years,

No temple finished before they died.

Now soon I too will join them

Though Iā€™ve labored oh so long,

Iā€™ll not see the rising spires

Or sing praises in Hosanna song.

Iā€™m just a common earthly man,

A laborer in a cause so great,

To generations yet unborn,

Iā€™m not one youā€™ll appreciate.

Through the years Iā€™ve toiled and sweat,

Shared blood and grief and tears,

Obeyed the prophetā€™s call to serve

Listened in faith, not fear.

Please do not take for granted

As you walk through these carved doors,

Or hear the echo of carpenters

From stairs or roof or floors

The love and work that went into

Many years of toil and prayer,

Feel our spirits in the halls

As you enter there.

Though the structureā€™s end Iā€™ll not see,

To others who this path may trod,

Go forth with diligence and faith

Till we finish the work of God.

The Claims of the Son 8: I Am the Resurrection and the Life

ā™« original song for SATB choir and piano by Stephen R Dalrymple

ā™« based on John 11

ā™« This collection of songs focuses on the Claims of Jesus Christ based on the ā€œI Amā€™s of the Gospel of John.Ā

ā™« ā€œI Am the Resurrection and the Lifeā€ was Jesusā€™ claim to Martha, immediately before He raised Lazarus from the dead.Ā

ā™« Jesus makes it clear here that those who put their trust in Jesus Christ will be raised from the dead in the last judgment. Those who are alive will enter the Kingdom era with transformed bodies that cannot die.Ā

ā™« Raising Lazarus from the dead was so threatening to the religious establishment that it caused the chief priest to plot the deaths of both Jesus and Lazarus.

By Matisyahu. By Ari Levine, Matthew Miller, Peter Gene Hernandez, and Philip Lawrence. Arranged by Jon Arterton. Contemporary. Octavo. 9 pages. Jon Arterton #4755115. Published by Jon Arterton (A0.777014).

This powerful song has been made universally popular by Matisyahu. Itā€™s about hope for a better world. The arranger says ā€œIā€™ve got about seventy arrangements available online and this one song has outsold all of my other arrangements COMBINED.ā€ Thereā€™s a reason for that ā€“ itā€™s an amazing song that is a perfect concert closer. Its melody causes instant earworms to all who hear it.
Sometimes I lay under the moon and I thank God I'm breathin'. Then I pray don't take me soon 'cause I am here for a reason. Sometimes in my tears I drown, but I never let it get me down. So when negativity surrounds, Ā I know someday it'll all turn around because All my life I been waitin' for, I been prayin' for, for the people to say; That we don't want to fight no more. They'll be no more wars, and our children will play. One day. One day.

A dramatic, beautiful, sacred hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball.

Text:
Behold, I Am the Light

ā€œBehold, I am the light; I have set an example for you.ā€ (3 Nephi 18:16)

Storms of darkness may descend like a winter sky.
Clouds of gloom may dominate; sun may be disguised.
Walking step by step with Me through mortality
Lessens shadows flawlessly; trusting is my plea:

Behold, I am the Light . . . a light that has no end.
I will lend my power; I will be thy Friend.
I can brighten evā€™ry path like a blazing torch.
I can lighten loads because Father is my source.

Behold, I am Godā€™s Light; His love shines through Me.
Never to be darkened, feel this love and see.
I will faithful be . . . trust Me perfectly.

Days of trial might seem long like the darkest night.
Tests of patience may endure evā€™n in Fatherā€™s sight.
Trusting in each morning sun is a blessed choice,
for bright truth will ever shine. Hear my faithful voice:

Behold, I am the Light . . . a light that has no end.
I will lend my power; I will be thy Friend.
I can brighten evā€™ry path like a blazing torch.
I can lighten loads because Father is my source.

Behold, I am Godā€™s Light; His love shines through Me.
Never to be darkened, feel this love and see.
Godā€™s light shines through Me, shining endlessly.

Composed by Richard Joseph Barber. Christian,Contemporary,Gospel,Sacred. Octavo. 16 pages. Barber Music Company #4727369. Published by Barber Music Company (A0.915699).

Dedication

Sometime in the 1980's, Richard Tober, a brother in Christ who was also an appliance repair man, came to our house on Hill Street in Coloma, Michigan to fix our kitchen range. He knew that I was a composer, and during the course of his time with us that day he told about his love for Jesus and his aspiration to write poetry with music to express that love. He didn't feel he was equipped to put music to his words, but he did have a poem that he gave me, wondering if I would set it to music for him. It was a difficult task because Richard's poetry was not set up in any formal poetic fashion; it was, however, a fulfilling task because his poem was such a simple, childlike, personal expression of his love for the Lord. I Am Going Home to Glory is the result of our collaboration. He was thrilled with the outcome. Now that Richard has left this world to be with Jesus, I am happy that God allowed and enabled me to set Richard's poem to music. -Richard Barber

Composed by Michelle Willis. A Cappella,Contemporary. Octavo. 10 pages. Teton Music #5033147. Published by Teton Music (A0.887281).

SATB, a cappella

Written for the Early Light Academy Spotlight Singers (South Jordan, UT) and taken from actual responses from the students they were asked, when people look at you, what do you want them to see? This song is intended to be a very personal expression for the singers as well as for the audience.

Text:
I see: eyes and a face, hands and feet
You see: the same
I see: tears and a smile, working, moving
You see: the same
I see: pain, joy, strength, endurance
You see, you think you see-but you canā€™t name it.
I see you, please see me.
When you look at me, see a person who isnā€™t afraid to be-- just be.
I am tall or I am small, but I am happy to be me.
I may be confident or meek, I may be really strong or weak,
And if it changes week to week, it doesnā€™t matter.
What matters is that you see me.
When you listen, notice that my voice may sometimes raise the roof
And other times it may seem aloof when I cannot find the proof
Of what is truth and what is fair, but listen ā€˜til you hear me share
And know deep down I really care, because it matters.
It matters that you see me.
I see: someone who is strong and kind, someone who knows their mind,
Someone who struggles just like me, but keeps fighting endlessly
I see you, please see me.
I see: a soul who finā€™ly knows Iā€™m here
And doesnā€™t judge if I bow down to smallish fears
You see me, and I see you, thereā€™s nothing greater we can do
Than to acknowledge weā€™re all travā€™ling down this road,
But not alone.
It matters-
That I see you-and you see me.

I See You
