Evocative Choral Setting of Emily Brontë's Fall, Leaves, Fall Perfect for Fall Concerts

Fall, leaves, fall; die flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

--Emily Brontë

Scored for SSATTB choir with piano accompaniment, Fall, Leaves, Fall by Charles Griffin brings Emily Brontë's autumnal poem to life through lush, intertwining vocal lines and vivid imagery. This expert choral setting perfectly captures the scene of leaves falling from trees through suspensions and gentle chromaticism that musically depicts leaves fluttering downward. Brief moments of uplifting vocal lines evoke the poem's imagery of leaves caught in an autumn breeze.

Premiered by the renowned San Francisco Choral Artists under Magen Solomon, this stirring work is ideal for advanced high school, college, and community choirs. The gorgeous choral writing showcases your ensemble's tone and technique through Griffin's colorful, expressive harmonic language.

Audiences will love the evocative setting of Brontë's text exploring autumn's transient beauty. Program your fall concert with this gorgeous, moving choral work that is perfect for the season. Fall, Leaves, Fall is available from Coriolis Press, and your audiences will love Griffin's artistic setting of a classic autumnal poem.

Organ, SATB Choir with Cantor/Leader of Song (and congregation), ca 5'

Text:

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit.

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.

He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort.

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.

You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing.

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord's own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever.

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.

Composed by Traditional Spiritual. Arranged by Charles Griffin. 20th Century,Blues,Contemporary,Spiritual. Octavo. 11 pages. Coriolis Press #5989585. Published by Coriolis Press (A0.1000877).

SATB with piano accompaniment and shaker
ca. 2'25 duration

This toe-tapping arrangement is based on a lesser-known traditional African American Spiritual melody that I fell in love with immediately upon encountering it. The arrangement is accessible to good high school choirs and average college/university groups and is sure to please all audiences. The shaker part can easily be taken up by a non-percussionist from within the choir.

Wonder where is my brother gone?
Wonder where is my brother John?
He is gone in the wilderness,
Ain't comin' no more.

Wonder where will I lie down?
Wonder where will I lie down?
In some lonesome place, Lord,
Down on the ground.

SATB a cappella, ca 3' - Text by Richard Eberhard (see below)

Commissioned as part of Faith Partners, a residency underwritten by the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Wolfensohn Family Foundation, and supplemental funding from St. Bartholomew's Church, St. Ignatius-Loyola and Temple Emanu-el. Premiered by St. Bartholomew's Church, William Tully, Rector, under the direction of William Trafka.

Text:

In after time, when all this dream
Becomes pure dream, and roughest years
Lie down among the tender grass,
And spring up sentient upon the meadow;

In that after time of great-born Aprils,
Beyond a century of tatters and malice,
When love has thrown out fear and madness
The eyes will see the sun as wonder.

In after time, when rage and chaos
Lose their sov'reign force, new dream
Will lift the shining life to spirit
And mate the make of man to merit.

Then shall holy summers come; then laughter
Godlike shake upon a dewy morning;
Then fullness grow - big with purpose,
And man shall know again his richness.
