An original setting of Christina Rossetti's classic poem, this version of In The Bleak Midwinter is in 4/4 and has a completely new melody! Each verse has its own arrangement, and altos and basses get the melody in some of the verses. This has been performed by the Edinburgh Singers and Voces Inauditae, and appears on Harmonia Sacra's 2021 CD In Dulci Jubilo. It should be approachable for any choir who are comfortable singing in four independent parts.

A classic Christmas carol arranged for SATB choir a cappella, harmonised mainly using the Dorian mode. Verse 4 uses a lot of chromatic harmony as death is foreshadowed, and the following chorus is sung by altos with a soprano descant, before the final verse, Glorious now behold him arise leads up to a chorus where altos sing the melody, tenors a countermelody, and the sopranos and basses sing alleluias over and under them (heaven sings alleluia, alleluia the earth replies!) Ranges: sopranos D4-G5, altos B3-D5, tenors E3-A4 (only three brief A4s which can be sung in falsetto), basses G2-D4.

A setting of a prayer attributed to St Columba:

Be thou a bright flame before me,
Be thou a shining star above me,
Be thou a smooth path below me,
Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me,
Today, tonight and evermore. Amen.

The opening has the four parts in slow-moving homophonic chords, with at least two parts staying the same between each pair of chords, so it's very easy to stay in tune and find your note. Today, tonight and evermore is set as a 4-part canon, simple to pick up and not going too high or low, which develops back to a final Amen where the slow chordal shifts return. Entirely diatonic with no accidentals, but sounds fresh and more difficult than it actually is!

This piece is SATB, no divisi, and should be suitable for most sacred occasions. It can be sung a cappella, or with light piano/organ doubling.

As The Rain Hides The Stars is an ancient Gaelic text which can be sung as a love song or a prayer - very versatile! This setting makes use of tonal clustered harmonies for a shimmering vocal effect. Some divisi to SSAATTBB at the start, but most of the piece is SATB.
