As part of my duties as composer-in-residence at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, Houston, Texas, I composed this brief work—in effect, a choral fanfare—for the beginning of the 2015 Christmas Eve Mass at Palmer Church. Rather than scoring the piece for a cappella chorus, as I have so often done in other music I composed for the outstanding Palmer Choir, Brady Knapp, Director of Music, I decided to include organ, in recognition of Palmer’s superb artist-in-residence, Ken Cowan, who is also Professor of Organ at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. -David Ashley White

Entering the Garden, my Savior knelt to pray.
Sensing what was coming, He sought another way.
Not my will, but Thine be done. Christ would bear the cost.
The bitter cup, He drank it up that none be lost.

Falsely jailed and tortured, He wore a crown of thorn,
Shunned by all His people, left lonely and forlorn.
Crucified upon a cross, nails pierced flesh and bone.
He suffered more, but meekly bore the cost alone.

Written for mixed barbershop ensemble, it would also be suitable for SATB high-school/college jazz ensembles. The melody sits primarily in the alto part, with one line of melody in the bass, but there are frequent voice crossings between the upper three voices, and it includes some tricky jazz harmonies.

This setting was written in response to a request from a church in Toccoa, Georgia, USA. The poem was written by Dr. Henry Fields, a former minister of the church, and now retired. 

It's quite a gentle setting, as befits the words, and is for mixed choir (SATB, with some divisions), with piano (or organ) accompaniment.  A light orchestration is also available from the composer.

The music builds to a gentle climax at the end of the poem:

As angels sing and shepherds praise

And wise men priceless treasures raise,

O bow your head to the lowly sod

For you hold none other than the Eternal God.
