After the Fire is a Christmas musical written by Glenn & Jan Christianson along with Byron Foxx. The musical is written for SATB choirs.

During a time of year when most people are celebrating the birth of Christ, we join a family who survived a house fire but lost everything. Mike & Sharon, along with their teenage on, Jacob, each respond differently to the tragedy. We see that, even though things look bleak from an earthly standpoint, God is still in control, and He uses even these difficulties to bring glory to Himself.

This program has eleven songs for choir. Two of the songs have a female solo who can also be the same person who plays Sharon in the program.

With a simple cast of four characters, the program can be done as a complete drama or in reader’s theater format.

The program length is approximately 45 minutes.

Tom Lehrer’s A Christmas Carol (1954) was one bright spot in a sea of 1950’s Christmas song sameness, (albeit a little too edgy for the BBC - they banned it from airplay). It is merry; it is tuneful; and yet in Lehrer’s own satirical way, it points out the true meaning of Christmas – its commercialization. It also pays homage to traditional Christmas carols (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Angels We Have Heard on High). This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment and optional sleigh bells. The Christmas carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, based on the 1863 poem Christmas Bells by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was set to music by Johnny Marks in 1956. Longfellow’s poem tells of the impact of hearing Christmas bells during the American Civil War. Marks, and other arrangers and performers normally omit the mention of the war in their adaptations of the poem. This arrangement uses the complete text of Longfellow’s masterpiece, and through respect to the text, (using choral colors and styles), honors what this arranger considers to be Marks intention, a simple hymn-tune narrative of America in time of crisis much like today. This arrangement in scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 4:15+-.

What Child Is This? is a ‘Christmas carol’ with lyrics written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865, set to the tune of the traditional English folk song ‘Greensleeves’.  The lyrics are taken from his poem The Manger Throne.  The song What Child Is This? was first published in 1871 in Christmas Carols Old and New.  The tune ‘Greensleeves’ association with the festive season can be dated back to 1642; also Shakespeare refers to this popular tune twice in his famous play Merry Wives of Windsor.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 3:12. It is arranged with the awe and wonder (and perhaps confusion) the townspeople and shepherds experienced with the birth of ‘this child.’
