Composed by Kyle Pederson. African American Heritage. Instrument part. 22 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3610-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3610-E).

English.

From the arranger, Kyle Pederson

To me, spirituals are the most powerful type of music. Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United Statesā€”and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, ā€œdeeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.ā€

The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows:
Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat)
Goinā€™ home to live with God
No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat)
Goinā€™ home to live with God
I want tā€™ meet my mother (repeat)
Goinā€™ home to live with God
I want tā€™ meet my Jesus (repeat)
Goinā€™ home to live with God

When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world todayā€”a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and graceā€”a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a personā€™s worth. A world where ā€œheaven has come to earth.ā€

In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protestā€”and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)ā€”where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities.

I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. Composed by Jeffrey Ouper. Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 19 pages. Jeffrey Ouper #2894533. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866214).

Winter's Breath is an original Christmas song for SATB Choir & Piano accompaniment.  There is some divided parts in the soprano.  The song's duration is about 6 minutes.  Winter's Breath is perfect for holiday concerts and worship services.  There is also a version for solo voice available.

About the song:

Winterā€™s Breath is an original Christmas song (original music and lyrics) composed in 2014. The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow.  I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.

Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois.  The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul.  I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.

The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter.  The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories.  The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future.  The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed.  The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

On the Lake written for advanced SSAA divisi and harp.
Fannie Isabelle Sherrick was an American poet who wrote songs and poems throughout the 1860's that captured hearts and minds. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years.

ON THE LAKE
There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away. The beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The trees bend down in the sun's warm glow Till their branches meet in the waves below, And the clouds in the far-off skies Are mirrored anew where the sunlight lies. I love to float where the shadows lie 'Neath the matchless glow of the summer sky; And I love to dream that these waves of light Will never fade in the gloomy night: But I know that the things I love Are as far from my reach as the clouds above. Oh, the beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The cloudlets of Heaven are mirrored there In a golden splendor so bright and fair That the soul is dazzled for aye By the beautiful light of this summer's day. Oh, I love to dream when this life is o'er We shall moor our boats near the golden shore; And our sorrows shall drift from us far away As the leaves that float in their idle play, And the waves shall smile in the sun When the night is over and life is done.

Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 13 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588435. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926665).

In the first chapter of Paulā€™s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his sonā€¦ I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paulā€™s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting.

The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ā€˜Lord, Lord,ā€™ will enter the kingdom of heavenā€¦ I will declare to them, ā€˜I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.ā€™ (Matthew 7:31-23).

Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in Ā¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

Composed by D. M. Gardner. Contemporary. Octavo. 14 pages. D. M. Gardner Music #2063481. Published by D. M. Gardner Music (A0.799656).

Lullaby is a beautifully melodic setting that interweaves choir, violin, cello, and piano as equal voices, together expressing the tender, yet powerful love and protective nature of a motherā€™s embrace. As a young child being rocked to sleep resists the urge to close his eyes, he is encouraged by his motherā€™s gentle, sweet melody to find laughter and adventure among his dreams.

As the poet, Veronica Toracca-Bragdon describes rocking her son, Singing to him before bed is my chance to connect with him, to tell him everything I love about him, to thank him for the happiness he brings us. I cherish that time alone with him, because the night he doesnā€™t ask me to sing to him will arrive too soon. Veronicaā€™s beautifully composed poem expresses not only these sentiments, but genuinely and tangibly represents the words that anyone who has children could imagine singing themselves.

Lullabyā€™s simple, timeless melody captures the beauty and tenderness of the moment, at the same time reminding us of the innocent, carefree, and playful nature of the children we love so much.

A dramatically beautiful, sacred hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball.

Text:
When in the dark with vision obscured,
My prayer is answered from Godā€™s peace conferred:
ā€œBe not afraid; oh, be not dismayed.
Jesus is near thee; for thy soul He paid.ā€

I am a covā€™nant chi-ld of God.
His holy Son draws my honor and laud.
I feel Christā€™s love; to Him I am bound.
Fearlessness comes from his merited crown.

I am an heir of Abrahamā€™s seed;
I will be blessed for each covā€™nant I heed.
I can be strong in these latter days.
Courage will come with Christā€™s infinite aid.

I will trust God and his Son of Man.
I know I can for I know whose I am.
I will hold tight to heavenā€™s sure rod,
For I am a covā€™nant child of God.

I am a child in Godā€™s family.
He knows my name and He calls me to be
Humble and bold, and in Him confide.
Jesus has promised Heā€™ll be by my side.

I can proclaim my legacy acquired
Because of my Saviorā€™s most holy desire.
Iā€™ll not forget my heritage bought,
For I am a covā€™nant child of God.

James Weldon Johnson's poem, The Gift to Sing, set for SATB choir by Erik Meyer

This piece encourages singers (especially younger ones) to find their own musical voice! It sets Johnson's introspective text about the quiet healing power of music, interspersed with sections for musical improvisation. Singers are welcome to create their own melody while the piano continues to play harmonically. Every voice's heartfelt contribution is valuable and beautiful.

I wrote this piece because throughout my career as a choir director, many of my singers have been told me I can't really sing, or so-and-so told me not to sing loud because I'm not good, or I can't improvise, etc. I want this piece to help bring out everyone's voice - no matter what you have been told in the past, you CAN sing, and more than that, I bet you can improvise! I hope this setting will help singers love their voice.

Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588423. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926663).

In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind.

The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christā€™s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.

The second stanza declares Godā€™s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.
