Choral SATB choir - Digital Download

SKU: H1.C5410DP

Composed by Pepper Choplin. General Worship, Assurance, Comfort, Eternal Life, Promise, Spiritual. Octavo. 8 pages. Hope Publishing - Digital #C5410DP. Published by Hope Publishing - Digital (H1.C5410DP).

Joshua:1:2 - Psalms 116:15.

Original anthem Set on the poetic banks of the Jordan River, this anthem expresses a yearning to cross over there. From the difficulties and pains of life, the song wistfully looks forward to the promise of heaven's bliss. The middle section speaks of the boat that crosses and the Captain who has already paid the fare. From there it develops into an expression of hope before suddenly returning to the quiet certainty that one day we will experience the peace of heaven.

Across the Borders - in memory of those who lost their lives to Covid-19

Across the Borders is an original song for SATB and piano by singers of Felixstowe Harmonies and their Musical Director, Chandra Grover. The project was inspired by the thoughts and feelings of the singers who collaborated on the lyrics while in isolation during the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. Their Musical Director set these lyrics to music.

The verses are ballad style with lyrics reflecting the feelings of loneliness, heartache and of those we knew. The chorus has a strong and uplifting message of solidarity, of friends uniting and how singing lifts the hearts across the borders of our world.

English.

John Keats’s poetry is especially well-suited to music because of its rich imagery and clear formal structures. The music here was composed within an English musical aesthetic, appropriate for a text by an English poet. Much of the music, especially the double choir sections, were inspired by the English choral music in the Anglican tradition. In addition to antiphonal textures, this piece employs some complex polyphony, reminiscent of the Renaissance, with a rich harmonic palette full of clusters and cross-relations. The piece ends in a dreamlike state, where the grasshopper and cricket are blurred into the overall beauty of nature. May be performed jointly as Two Keats Choruses with The Human Seasons (8086).

SKU: A0.841250

Composed by Chris Gordon. Contemporary. Octavo. 18 pages. Cool Wind Music Digital #3029087. Published by Cool Wind Music Digital (A0.841250).

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside.  It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!

This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.'   That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!

I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.

Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.

Composed by David Warin Solomons. A Cappella,Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Instructional,Sacred. Octavo. 6 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2036509. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.776016).

This setting for Christmas represents the cold of a Northern winter (the cruel wind blows) although of course the actual events took place in rather warmer climes. It also reflects much of the liturgical and popular symbolism of the Christmas season: robins, holly etc and it brings our thoughts towards the season of Easter with the blood of Good Friday. A robin brought some holly all covered with snow. The cruel wind blows. From each little berry fell drops of blood, Which covered the earth where the Virgin once stood. The cruel wind blows. Dark was the sky when Angels came to stay, They brought old lanterns to lead the way. The cruel wind blows. Candles brightly shine for all to see, They glow tonight through the ageing year. Tender are the lilies as soft as her gown And white are the ringlets that fall to the ground. Mary with her child upon this Winter night, She walked through the darkness with yellow candle light. North winds blow across the fields, But only one child continues to dream. The cruel wind blows The cruel wind blows. ©Tom Clarke Buying this file gives the right to print six copies of the music score.

SKU: A0.535387

Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 65 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3043973. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.535387).

I. Sinfonia
II. To Mary on the vigil of her Assumption
III. A Votive Song
IV. The Heliotrope-the mind of man turned to God

Ascensions (2009) for SATB chorus, traverso, baroque violin, viola da gamba, and organ was commissioned by and is
dedicated to the Cornell University Chamber Singers, Holland J. Jancaitis, director.
The work is a cantata consisting of an instrumental sinfonia followed by choral settings of three poems by neo-Latin poet
Jakob Balde, S.J. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.
In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religious
expression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strong
correlation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked in
classical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary and
relevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)
The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forward
momentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs a
bouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song on
the acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. The final
movement returns to the celebratory spirit of the opening; this time, instead of the Virgin’s journey, the poem describes
the speaker’s journey and compares a purposeful sea voyage to a directed life.
Balde’s poems are provided in their original Latin and in two translations. One is a free translation in rhyming poetic
English created by James J. Mertz, S.J., longtime professor at Loyola University. The other is a newly-created literal
translation by Edward J. Vodoklys, S.J., Senior Lecturer in Classics at the College of the Holy Cross.
Carson P. Cooman, January 2009, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
PERFORMANCE NOTES: The composer prefers a classically-informed Italianate pronunciation of the Latin
(church Latin is acceptable). (It is important that V always be pronounced as V, not as the W sound
often used by classical Latinists.)
The work is conceived for a chamber choir, as a larger choir would not balance the timbres of the baroque
instruments. It is suggested that 16–24 singers be employed (no fewer than 12).
As with much early repertoire, dynamic and expressive markings are kept to a minimum. It is expected that
director and performers will inflect lines expressively and naturally. The organ part is notated for a small portatif
organ with pull-down pedal (with no independent pedal stops). If played on a larger instrument, this smaller
registration plan should be kept in mind so as to create balance with the instruments and choir
