The nostalgic lyric and melody are sung by a young girl writing a letter to her boyfriend serving in the Pacific Campaign during WWII. Walt Whitman's As the Time Draws Nigh is about existential crisis and positive acceptance. The choral setting moves from dark to light, ending with a serene, but not completely untroubled epilogue. It's a beautiful piece that would add depth to any choral program.
