Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719523 Composed by Curtis Hanson. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 59 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032867. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719523). The Missa Millennia was composed during the spring of 2000 and premiered the following November by the choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth, MN. Scored for a chamber orchestra of strings, keyboard, and solo oboe (full score and instrumental parts available separately), the work is not so much a celebration of the new millennium as it is an assimilation of many of the musical styles, characteristics, and forms of the previous thousand years. The entire piece is in the form of the traditional Mass, a musical form having its origins in the Middle Ages, and is divided into the five movements commonly found in the Mass Ordinary: Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), Gloria (Glory to God in the highest), Credo (the Nicene Creed), Sanctus – Benedictus (Holy, holy, holy – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). In the final movement, the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) concludes the work. Although the Missa Millennia as a whole is distinctly contemporary, elements from many earlier musical periods are incorporated into the movements. These include chant, open fifth and parallel fifth harmonic movement (organum), and canonic imitation from the Middle Ages and Renaissance; fugue, word-painting, terraced dynamics, ostinato (a repeated rhythmic or bass accompaniment), Alberti bass accompaniment figures, ABA form, and dominant-tonic harmonic relationships typical of Baroque and Classical music to name but a few. Other significant features are the usage of non-Western modality in the plaintive solo oboe and of pedal point, a sustained tone in the bass over which the melody and harmony evolve. Pedal point, a compositional tool used throughout music history, dates from the Middle Ages about the time of St. Francis. Although not directly based upon the music of any composer, the astute listener may hear musical ideas reminiscent of Vivaldi, Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Duruflé, and others. In the audio file, the 2nd movement (Gloria) can be found at approximately 6'25, the 3rd movement (Credo) at 12'05, the 4th movement (Sanctus) at 21'15, and the final movement (Agnus Dei) at 31'05. The complete Mass is approximately 43 minutes long.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.960301 Composed by Cornish traditional. Arranged by Stephen Smith. Christmas. Octavo. 6 pages. Stephen Smith #6480313. Published by Stephen Smith (A0.960301). St. Day is the name of a village near Redruth in Cornwall, England, where a version of this carol was transcribed from the singing of a local man in the early 1900s. The text is a CliffsNotes version of the life of Christ, relating each event to a different feature of the holly-tree -- blossom, prickle, bark, and berry.  But the tune is a rollicking drinking-song, rousing and fun. The arrangement is inspired by, and dedicated to, one of my musical idols, the great American composer and teacher Alice Parker; hopefully it exemplifies some of the choral-arranging principles she has sought to instill in her students (and anyone else who will listen!) for the past half-century or so. Thank you, Alice!

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1215879 Composed by Arthur Ager. Arranged by Robert Luke Thompson. 20th Century,A Cappella,Christian,Easter,Praise & Worship. Octavo. 6 pages. Monkspath Music #812573. Published by Monkspath Music (A0.1215879). James Arthur Ager (1867-1947) was a British composer, organist, and music educator. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London under Hubert Parry and Frederick Bridge. Ager served as the organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew's Church in Birmingham for over 50 years. Ager also became Professor of Organ & Harmony at the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music (the predecessor of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) for nearly four decades. Although not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Ager's music, including a variety of songs, choral, piano, and organ works, is worth exploring for those interested in late 19th and early 20th-century music. Perhaps his most famous composition is The Legend of St. Christopher, a cantata based on the medieval legend. Rejoicing is a beautiful hymn for SATB choir, which would be perfect for any number of concerts, festal days and services, such as Easter, Harvest, Earth Day, or for any suitable occasion. The register for all voices is suitable and accessible, making it an ideal addition to any choir’s repertoire. This version (in the original key of A major) has been re-engraved for both SATB short score, and long score – giving your choir the flexibility you may need. The short score has been kept as close to the original as possible, whilst the long score features some suggested extra dynamic markings. SATB chorus - Digital Download SKU: BJ.1406 Composed by Sofia Söderberg. Christian. Octavo. 8 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1406. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1406). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.Music based on Gregorian themes. In the autumn of 2015, Malmo Live Vokalensemble performed Thierry Machuel's Paroles contre l'oubli - words against oblivion. In a large-scale art project, prisoners serving a life sentence at the Clairvaux high-security prison in north-eastern France were interviewed by the composer, who set their stories to music. The piece is incredibly dark, coloured by the innermost thoughts of individuals who know they will never again be free, people who are slipping into oblivion. Clairvaux wasn't always a prison, though - it was formerly an important monastery. Established by St. Bernhard in 1115 and closed in connection with the French Revolution, Clairvaux is a mythic place. For some, it is an abbey where thousands of monks voluntarily chose the path of saints, plunging themselves into the blessed silence of darkness. For others, it is a prison, the sheer name of which inspires terror and generates horrific images. My intention was that we, with our concert, would create a bridge between the present and the past, between incarceration and voluntary solitude. So I sought out the historical sources for our earliest notated music, from the French abbey of Solemn, and composed a variety of versions based on Gregorian themes. Kyrie and Agnus Dei are two of them. - Sofia Soderberg.
