For SATB, trumpet and organ, this setting of James Montgomery's hymn came about when a fellow choir director asked if I had any choral arrangements of this text to the tune Ellacombe. I offered to rearrange my setting of the Palm Sunday hymn, Hosanna, Loud Hosanna to this text, which fit the purpose exactly. The recording is of the original text, (which is also available) but still provides an idea of the piece. The addition of a trumpet adds to the impact of this setting, which is of moderate difficulty. It is suitable for Advent and General Worship services. Published by Evelyn R Larter (A0.749799). From the Piae Cantiones, 1582, the popular carol Personent Hodie is arranged here in its English translation. The refrain is in Latin, and somewhat reminiscent of parts of Carmina Burana! This was commissioned for a Lessons and Carols Service in a cathedral in my area several years ago. The choral parts are not difficult, however the organ accompaniment is more challenging - not wholly accurate in the recording!
