It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.

Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry  - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. The familiar chant does not appear until partway through the instrumental break, and continues euphorically through the modulation to the thundering finale. There are opportunities for ambitious sopranos and basses to reach the extremes of their range, and three-way divisi for the altos.

Rather, I was particularly drawn to a poem written by the Roman poet Catullus. Simple in nature, the poem is only 3 phrases yet delivers a strong message of the turmoil found in the human psyche. “Odi et Amo� translates to “I hate and I love�. The poem embellishes the poets struggle to balance the extremes of the human emotion and how torturous it can be to navigate 2 of our strongest emotions. The call of the opening “Odi et Amo� is repeated numerous times throughout the piece to drive home the 2 emotions of Hate and Love. The work commands exceptional precision of intonation between the 8 parts. While slow in nature though its tempo, the piece has numerous harmonic classes of 2nds to create not only tension, but a longing passion desperate for resolution. -Aaron Gage.

This hymn first appeared in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work, in 1883. From thence it passed into the Scottish Hymnal 1884; and there set to special music by Dr. A. L. Peace. This SATB divisi arrangement by Mark R Lewis imitates the tradition of Latin plainsong but is fully modern in conception. While this arrangement is not too extreme in terms of notes and rhythms, it will stretch the limits of many singers' vocal ranges and incorporates some complex harmonies. ​The arrangement incorporates a pedal note drone that can be played on any instrument. There is an optional hand drum part. While this arrangement does work with only the drone accompaniment, Mark has also published string orchestra and woodwind ensemble settings that work wonderfully as accompaniment to the vocal setting. Published by Zack Richards (A0.894408). I wrote this piece in response to the #BlackLivesMatter Protests across the United States and world during the early summer of 2020. The extreme extent of peaceful protests and violent riots demonstrated the desperate need for change in a way I had not witnessed before. I knew quickly that I wanted to write music in some sort of response to the situation, but I struggled at first to find my voice within the movement. I am a white male and have experienced the privilege that comes with it. No matter how much I sympathized or understood the struggles of minorities in our culture, I knew I could not possibly bring the full meaning of it through my music, as I could never really experience the trials they have faced constantly for so long. So instead I decided to write words and music that reflected how I hoped things would be going forward after this movement. I wanted this to be an anthem for those who have suffered through real oppression, in any form. While there are some religious undertones in the text I chose, I tried to find words that could resonate with anyone, reaching beyond color, culture, belief, orientation, age, or any other dividing label. I tried to write in regard to one thing we all have in common, humanity. I hope I was able to accomplish this. The anthem can be done in parts or unison or as a solo. It can also be done with or without accompaniment.
