Written for SSAATTBB Choir.I have long been fascinated with setting old Latin texts to music; particularly ones outside of the traditional sacred poetry found in the various requiems that have been composed throughout the centuries. Rather, I was particularly drawn to a poem written by the Roman poet Catullus. Simple in nature, the poem is only 3 phrases yet delivers a strong message of the turmoil found in the human psyche. “Odi et Amo� translates to “I hate and I love�. The poem embellishes the poets struggle to balance the extremes of the human emotion and how torturous it can be to navigate 2 of our strongest emotions. The call of the opening “Odi et Amo� is repeated numerous times throughout the piece to drive home the 2 emotions of Hate and Love. The work commands exceptional precision of intonation between the 8 parts. While slow in nature though its tempo, the piece has numerous harmonic classes of 2nds to create not only tension, but a longing passion desperate for resolution. -Aaron Gage.

This SATB arrangement of Circle of Life forgoes the traditional Lebo M opening for a more metaphorical sunrise, and shortly thereafter the sopranos and altos are the mother cooing to her newborn child, the ingonyama. The familiar chant does not appear until partway through the instrumental break, and continues euphorically through the modulation to the thundering finale. There are opportunities for ambitious sopranos and basses to reach the extremes of their range, and three-way divisi for the altos.

Mark R Lewis #810549. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1213363). What Wondrous Love Is This is an American folk hymn that became popular during the early 1800s. It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.

Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry  - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. It was composed with extreme rapidity; it seemed to me that its construction occupied only a few minutes, and I felt myself rather in the position of one who was being dictated to than of an original artist I was suffering from extreme mental distress, and the hymn was the fruit of pain. This hymn first appeared in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work, in 1883. From thence it passed into the Scottish Hymnal 1884; and there set to special music by Dr. A. L. Peace. Sometimes the song of a single voice, over time, evolves into a needed chorus of many. Such is Joni Mitchell’s anthem to activism “The Fiddle and the Drum� (1969).  Originally an anti-Vietnam-war protest song, the song has since been recorded 42 times, and counting, because it inspires us to “remember all the good things ‘we’ are… and because we have all come to fear the beating of ‘your’ drum.�  This arrangement is scored for 8-part [SSAATTBB occasional divisi] chorus, with a very minimal piano part added for percussion-purposes only; essentially the piece is sung a cappella. The ‘piano’ part is actually an interpretation of a timpani and bass drum [2 players] accompaniment which is included with the score.  Performance time 3:48+- Note: this arrangement was conceived with large choral ensemble with mature voices in mind.  The registers are extreme for the bass and alto sections, but doable when building the overall sound of the ensemble and adjusting dynamic levels of the other voices.

Ranges are not extreme and harmonies are straight-forward. Voices are fully supported by the accompaniment. The only challenge occurs in the second verse as the treble voices continue with the Banks and Braes melody, but the bass and tenor juxtapose the melody of another well-known Scottish tune, Loch Lomond. Alternate contemporary words for the original Scottish dialect are provided.

Challenging but very fun to perform with an emotional ride throughout.  The conductor has the freedom to interpret tempos as he likes.  Enjoy this very unique piece.  I've performed this for my church a number of times and each time the song has been received with extreme enthusiasm.

This SATB divisi arrangement by Mark R Lewis imitates the tradition of Latin plainsong but is fully modern in conception. While this arrangement is not too extreme in terms of notes and rhythms, it will stretch the limits of many singers' vocal ranges and incorporates some complex harmonies. ​The arrangement incorporates a pedal note drone that can be played on any instrument. There is an optional hand drum part. While this arrangement does work with only the drone accompaniment, Mark has also published string orchestra and woodwind ensemble settings that work wonderfully as accompaniment to the vocal setting.
