By Fifth Harmony. By Carmen Reece, Edgar Etienne, Ericka Coulter, Harmony Samuels, and Sara Mancuso. Arranged by Jeffrey Bowen. Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Pop. 9 pages. Music Arrangement Services Inc. #1011164. Published by Music Arrangement Services Inc. (A0.1430663).

Performed by Fifth Harmony from the film “Hotel Transylvania 2”.  This arrangement starts SSA with the lower voices coming in about a minute into the song, which makes this arrangement perfect for a transition or clothing change in your show.

This song is about being in love with someone that is their opposite.  The song refers to a monster, thorns, roses, covered in dirt, covered in gold, ticking someone off, being stupid, being bored, bitter the better.  This arrangement is shorter than the original, offers a vocal splash and dance break.  This arrangement is designed for high school or college show choir, concert choir or community choir.  Concert Band Score accompaniment also available.  Performance time is approximately 2:20.

Composed by Curtis Hanson. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 59 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032867. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719523).

The Missa Millennia was composed during the spring of 2000 and premiered the following November by the choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth, MN. Scored for a chamber orchestra of strings, keyboard, and solo oboe (full score and instrumental parts available separately), the work is not so much a celebration of the new millennium as it is an assimilation of many of the musical styles, characteristics, and forms of the previous thousand years. The entire piece is in the form of the traditional Mass, a musical form having its origins in the Middle Ages, and is divided into the five movements commonly found in the Mass Ordinary: Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), Gloria (Glory to God in the highest), Credo (the Nicene Creed), Sanctus – Benedictus (Holy, holy, holy – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). In the final movement, the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) concludes the work. Although the Missa Millennia as a whole is distinctly contemporary, elements from many earlier musical periods are incorporated into the movements. These include chant, open fifth and parallel fifth harmonic movement (organum), and canonic imitation from the Middle Ages and Renaissance; fugue, word-painting, terraced dynamics, ostinato (a repeated rhythmic or bass accompaniment), Alberti bass accompaniment figures, ABA form, and dominant-tonic harmonic relationships typical of Baroque and Classical music to name but a few. Other significant features are the usage of non-Western modality in the plaintive solo oboe and of pedal point, a sustained tone in the bass over which the melody and harmony evolve. Pedal point, a compositional tool used throughout music history, dates from the Middle Ages about the time of St. Francis. Although not directly based upon the music of any composer, the astute listener may hear musical ideas reminiscent of Vivaldi, Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Duruflé, and others. In the audio file, the 2nd movement (Gloria) can be found at approximately 6'25, the 3rd movement (Credo) at 12'05, the 4th movement (Sanctus) at 21'15, and the final movement (Agnus Dei) at 31'05. The complete Mass is approximately 43 minutes long.

Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,A Cappella,Contemporary,Religious. Octavo. 37 pages. Studio at the Post #744209. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1143904).

Duration: 16 minutes, 33 pp. Description: Exodus is a great story that belongs to everyone. Not only is it central to Judaism, not only is it integral to the Christian Bible, it is an immortal story that has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to oppressed peoples everywhere on this planet. It is relevant not just as ancient scripture but as living text, to be rediscovered by each new generation of an ever-widening Family of Man. The theme of struggle against oppression and slavery was just as relevant to the early Christians persecuted in Ancient Rome as it was relevant to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, just as relevant to the Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate as it is to the South African Blacks resisting Apartheid. From the Dark Ages and the Spanish Inquisition, to Ghandi's emancipation of India, to the Holocaust, to, full-circle, the ongoing struggles in Palestine today, the story of Exodus is a guiding light in a dim and often grim world. According to the composer: The Story of a Leader is a collection of ‘re-chorales’ I created one summer when I was totally immersed in a post-educational obsession with the 371 Chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach. We used to study these to learn the rules of harmony and voice-leading (no parallel fifths, avoid crossed voices, etc.) at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I began my compositional career. That summer, now a professor of music in my own right, I discovered many broken and bent rules by the master himself and, along with the glory of being able to work through these Chorales myself at the piano, I felt an incredible feeling of liberation and possibilities unmediated by instructors of music theory. I began by stripping away all that Bach wrote, leaving only the hymn tunes which were not his to begin with. These tunes existed long before Bach used them for his tonal experiments, some attributed to Martin Luther, or someone else, others simply listed as ‘anonymous’. The same is true for the texts, which were then translated into English mostly in the 19th century (the provenance of each can be found herein on the first page of each of my reharmonizations). In some cases I modified the text to fit the context. I selected 12 of these ‘re-chorales,’ linking them together based on their texts in a kind of logic that worked for me, and created a narrative that told The Story of a Leader (Moses). This story is highlighted in the music with such techniques as cross-modal harmonies, points of imitation, a beer drinking song in one instance, and in another, to symbolize the parting of the seas for Moses’ people, an inversion of the soprano line in the bass..

By One Direction. By Jamie Scott, John Henry Ryan, and Julian Bunetta. Arranged by Eric Hagmann. A Cappella,Pop. Octavo. 6 pages. Eric Hagmann #4580515. Published by Eric Hagmann (A0.796824).

An SATB + solo contemporary a cappella arrangement of Drag Me Down by One Direction.

Recorded in 2015 for their fifth album, Made in the A.M., Drag Me Down was One Direction's first single since Zayn Malik left the group in March of the same year.  It topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Austria, and New Zealand, and it won the fan-voted Best Video Award at the 2016 Brit Awards.

This arrangement retains the energy and intensity of the original song while adding a dash of supportive harmony to give it that contemporary a cappella flavor.  The main melody fits comfortably in most tenor ranges but also could be performed easily by treble voices with minimal adjustment during the pre-chorus/chorus.  Vocal percussion is encouraged, and this tune would be perfect for someone who might be learning beatboxing for the first time.  Easy enough to learn over the course of a few rehearsals but still challenging enough to keep it engaging, this piece would be great as an opener or closer in your high school or college ensemble's repertoire.

Soprano range: Bb4-E5
Alto range: G3-C5
Tenor range: C3-G4
Bass range: F2-C4.
