Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod. ARRANGEMENT DETAILSVoicing SSATB Choir and Piano AccompanimentDifficulty IntermediateGENRE DETAILS Genres A Cappella, Classical, Film/TV, Holiday, Wedding.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.774724 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Sandra Milliken. Folk,World. Octavo. 14 pages. Sandra Milliken #3873279. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774724). The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 ā€“ 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australiaā€™s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.1007125 Composed by Mogens Eliasen. Folk,Romantic Period. Octavo. 40 pages. Soverenity Enterprises Inc. #2948289. Published by Soverenity Enterprises Inc. (A0.1007125). The 40-page score is a choral symphony with a powerful lesson to modern people, based on an old Danish folk song about the young super-hero Ramund.  The score is dense with contents, both musically and lyrically, and alone for that reason, the 8-minute performance takes an advanced choir. The original folk song dates back to the Viking age and consist of many episodes ofRamund's life, almost like a personal saga. Some have undoubtedly been added later, making the total number of stanzas go up around 50, but the main idea of the song isto report about a young lad, whose ideas of what is right for him to do or not doare completely unaffected by other people's opinions, including those of royalties andcelebrities. The stories are in many regards comparable to those of Beowolf.Although the stories generally are dramatic and bloody, Ramund always retains hiscool attitude and shows how unimpressed he is with power demonstrations, even hisown when he is provoked to use his strength. It is a common element throughout thestories that Ramund detests evil and aggression, and he goes to great lengths to fightpower abusers and aggressive elements. He just wants to live in peace and not haveto be bothered by all those who like to abuse power!Included in this presentation for piano and 8 voices are 11 stanzas from what is believedto be original, in English translation, with focus on clarity of meaning, more so thanpoetical rules and rhymes. The first ruling concept has been to obtain clarity and agreat fit to the music. The second concept has been to add the inspiration this old folksong has created in the mind of a modern rebel who would like to see some ofRamund's attitude to power and power abusers put into action in our modern corruptsociety. Maybe in a less bloody version, but definitely with a similar effect! The added2 stanzas and the attached coda, as well as the added lyrics to the intermezzos and theincorporated commentaries to the action should serve that purpose. In addition, the original tune itself, as well as the lyrics and the intermezzo, haveinspired some musical development throughout the piece, to further accentuate themeaning and the messages about respecting each other, standing together againstabuse, and not letting power abusers get away with their crimes. The 8 voices cover ranges as follows:     First sopranos: C4 through Bb5 (possibly G5);     Second sopranos: C4 through E5;     All altos: G3 through D5;     All tenors: C3 through G#4(possibly F#4);     First basses: F2 through D4;     Second basses: D2 through B3

A gentle setting for chorus and keyboard, rich in melody and harmony, of Dorothy Parker's poem.Ā The things she knew, let her forget again-The voices in the sky, the fear, the cold,The gaping shepherds, and the queer old menPiling their clumsy gifts of foreign gold.Let her have laughter with her little one;Teach her the endless, tuneless songs to sing,Grant her her right to whisper to her sonThe foolish names one dare not call a king.Keep from her dreams the rumble of a crowd,The smell of rough-cut wood, the trail of red,The thick and chilly whiteness of the shroudThat wraps the strange new body of the dead.Ah, let her go, kind Lord, where mothers goAnd boast his pretty words and ways, and planThe proud and happy years that they shall knowTogether, when her son is grown a man.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1319814 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Irish. 10 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #908371. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1319814). This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as ā€œThe Isle of Skyeā€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland. Ā The boat in the song (ā€œSpeed bonny boatā€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 ā€œcarried the lad who was born to be kingā€ to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as ā€œBonnie Prince Charlie.ā€ The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Ā In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers.Ā The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SATB arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 ā€“ D5; Alto: A3 (only once) ā€“ B4; Tenor: D3ā€“D4; Bass: G2-B3.

SATB choir, piano - Moderately Easy - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8154-E Composed by Gwyneth W. Walker. 16 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8154-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8154-E). English. This new arrangement focuses on several, specific aspects of the lyrics, and of the journey. Envisioning that one is walking to that land, the piano introduction, in a swing rhythm, is marked At a strolling tempo. When the chorus enters, there is a bounce to their step, with the staccato dots coming each time on the word with- Come and go with me to that land...This is a jaunty expedition. One sees one's parents waiting in that land. Loving friends are there as well. A bit of scat singing and finger snapping adds to the energy.A slower middle section, in blues style, affirms that They'll be no slavery in that land. Shackles are thrown to the ground, and freedom breaks forth. This leads to a quick and energetic return to the gospel song, with a final refrain of They'll be singing in that land, voices ringing in that land! This is very American music, in a gospel, blues, and folk style.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787250 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Patriotic,Standards. Octavo. 16 pages. Burke & Bagley #49747. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. Follow along in the score as you listen to a performance in this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VVW1Ah6kqE  SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS  Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.  Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares drop off like autumn leaves. Here is calm so deep, grasses cease waving. Everything in wild nature fits into us, as if truly part and parent of us.  The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, Making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.955886 Composed by Traditional 19th century English Shanty. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. Contemporary,Folk. 18 pages. Scott S. Stewart #6673463. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.955886). Bound for the Rio Grande was one of the favorite sea shanties among outward bound British and American ships during the 19th century. And the Rio Grande referred to in this song is that one in the southernmost part of Brazil known as Rio Grande do Sul.  A song handed down through oral (aural) means by the rough and tough salty sailors from the great days of sail produced many variations to text, temperament and purpose. Yet the common denominator in all versions is saying good-bye to loved ones left behind in order to pursue the dreams of adventure and riches. This rollicking setting is scored for 4-part SATB (optional bass solo) ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:08+-

Published by John A Sandford (A0.972797). The famous 18th century Scottish ballad has been given a 21st century makeover! Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. Please note that a simplified (SAB) version is also available to purchase from Sheet Music Plus.
