Composed by Curtis Hanson. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 59 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032867. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719523).

The Missa Millennia was composed during the spring of 2000 and premiered the following November by the choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth, MN. Scored for a chamber orchestra of strings, keyboard, and solo oboe (full score and instrumental parts available separately), the work is not so much a celebration of the new millennium as it is an assimilation of many of the musical styles, characteristics, and forms of the previous thousand years. The entire piece is in the form of the traditional Mass, a musical form having its origins in the Middle Ages, and is divided into the five movements commonly found in the Mass Ordinary: Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), Gloria (Glory to God in the highest), Credo (the Nicene Creed), Sanctus – Benedictus (Holy, holy, holy – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). In the final movement, the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) concludes the work. Although the Missa Millennia as a whole is distinctly contemporary, elements from many earlier musical periods are incorporated into the movements. These include chant, open fifth and parallel fifth harmonic movement (organum), and canonic imitation from the Middle Ages and Renaissance; fugue, word-painting, terraced dynamics, ostinato (a repeated rhythmic or bass accompaniment), Alberti bass accompaniment figures, ABA form, and dominant-tonic harmonic relationships typical of Baroque and Classical music to name but a few. Other significant features are the usage of non-Western modality in the plaintive solo oboe and of pedal point, a sustained tone in the bass over which the melody and harmony evolve. Pedal point, a compositional tool used throughout music history, dates from the Middle Ages about the time of St. Francis. Although not directly based upon the music of any composer, the astute listener may hear musical ideas reminiscent of Vivaldi, Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Duruflé, and others. In the audio file, the 2nd movement (Gloria) can be found at approximately 6'25, the 3rd movement (Credo) at 12'05, the 4th movement (Sanctus) at 21'15, and the final movement (Agnus Dei) at 31'05. The complete Mass is approximately 43 minutes long.

SKU: IZ.CBW2210

Composed by Michael Francis Smith. Score and Parts. 58 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CBW2210. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW2210).

6.75 x 10.5 inches.

Some years back, during a series of retreats, prayerful reflection on the “servant
passages from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Is. 40-53) coalesced into what would
become an eight-movement cantata entitled: The Servant of Yahweh.
“How Beautiful on the Mountain represents movement three of that larger work - a
Lenten cantata highlighting key aspects of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus,
viewed through the lens of the aforementioned servant passages.
“How Beautiful on the Mountain (from Is.52 ff) attempts to capture in two sections the
joyful vision of God's people being led back to Zion from exile in Babylon. Israel's
deliverer is near, proclaiming peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, leading
Israel back to Jerusalem. The New Testament likewise speaks of deliverance from
bondage – bondage from sin, and healing of the breach between God and humanity. It is
through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus that this deliverance is
accomplished. In both cases, there is cause for great joy.
Musically, movement from the more subdued preface (part 1) to the festive Latin groove
(part 2) conveys the transition from journey to jubilation.
The present rendition, written for SATB choir and piano with optional flute and oboe
marks the latest evolution in the work's arrangement history. The original
accompaniment included guitar, bass, drum, flute and electric violin. However, in 2009,
through a collaboration with bassist/arranger, Perry Orfanella, a full orchestral score was
developed. Most recently, in order to make the piece more accessible to church choirs
and other choral groups, Phil Sims (musician/arranger and partner of Imagine Music
Publishing) reduced the orchestral score and completed the present arrangement for
piano and SATB choir.

SKU: A0.933611

Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Thomas Coker. Folk,Patriotic. Octavo. 4 pages. Thomas Rembert Coker Jr #3503513. Published by Thomas Rembert Coker Jr (A0.933611).

In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups.

About the National Anthem:

The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship.  At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States.

Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation.

According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning.
