Songs My Mother Taught Me is a song originally composed in 1880 for voice and piano by Antonín Dvořák. It is the fourth of seven songs from his cycle Gypsy Songs Op. 55. This song, in particular, has achieved widespread popularity. This sentimental song, filled with warm emotion, has been performed and recorded by a number of well-known artists as diverse as Glenn Miller and Fritz Kreisler. And, the influence of Czech folk-song is immediately recognizable. This arrangement has been expanded to include 4-part mixed choir (English text), organ and brass quintet. The popular Jalousie ‘Tango Tzigane’ (Jealousy ‘Gypsy Tango’) was written by Danish violinist, composer and conductor Jacob Gade in 1925.  It was composed for the opening of the American silent film Don Q., Son of Zorro.  Gade had been inspired by a newspaper account of a man who murdered his wife in jealous passion. This tango lives easily in two worlds; both ‘classical’ ensembles and those who perform ‘light’ music appreciate Gade’s creativity for its musicianship and audience appeal.  This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Published by John A Sandford (A0.972797). The famous 18th century Scottish ballad has been given a 21st century makeover! Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. Please note that a simplified (SAB) version is also available to purchase from Sheet Music Plus.
