This Ode is the last of six Purcell composed for the celebration of the birthday of Queen Mary, wife of William III. It was performed on 30th April, 1694 when the queen was 33 years old. She died in December of the same year. The author of the feeble, conventionally flattering words is unknown; it needed a genious like Purcell to create out of them this brilliant piece of music.

This ode is the last of six birthday pieces that Purcell composed for Queen Mary, wife of William III. It was performed for the 33rd birthday of the Queen on April 30, 1694. The queen died in December of the same year. The poet of the shallow, conventionally flattering text is unknown. It took a genius like Purcell to make this brilliant work out of it. The edition is part of the Trinity syllabus 2007 (grade performer's certificate).

Henry Purcell’s setting of Music for a While, from his music for the play Oedipus, by John Dryden and Nathaniel Lee (1678), was long a staple of my concert repertoire – and hard to match for its elegant and expressive beauty. This choral setting is my own attempt to do justice to the text and to the spirit of Purcell’s original.

“O Death, rock me asleep�: The lament of Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of King Henry the VIIIth, is essentially a Tudor-era poem inspired (perhaps attributed) by/to her last days in the Tower of London while awaiting execution. She was convicted on charges of high treason, adultery and incest, and sentenced to be beheaded. The authorship of this dirge is entirely speculative; yet William Shakespeare quotes it, and Henry Purcell uses the same funeral ostinato a 100 years later. A nod to Voices of Music (Early Music Ensemble) and their gutsy scholarship regarding the B-flat/B-natural controversy. This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with keyboard accompaniment.
