Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. The piano part is also quite prominent with a strong melodic line of its own. Each voice has the main melody line at some point in the performance and can work with 4 individual voices (one per part) or a larger choir. Although written for 4 parts, I have deliberately put the bass line firmly in the piano accompaniment so it could effectively be sung by a 3 part choir, as evidenced by the a capella section at the end. The words are based on British folksong imagery in which the briar represents 'man' and the rose represents 'woman'. .

It is a carol to be sung during the Advent or Christmas period as it tells of the coming of Christ. This unaccompanied carol is best sung as an introit to a church service but can be equally placed anywhere in a concert of Christmas music. It is a carol best suited to an adult, mixed choir of modest ability but its harmonic interest might appeal to more intermediate/higher ability singers.

This version, composed in 2016, maintains the melodic line, key and tempo of the original tune but has more variety of accompaniment styles, featuring lilting piano accompaniment with unison voices and an unaccompanied SATB section. It is suitable for adult mixed choirs of modest ability. .
