Kirke Mechem composed the Seven Joys of Christmas for the Chamber Singers of the San Francisco College for Women. He set out with the goal of setting lesser-known, but none the less attractive, carols from different countries in order to paint different aspects of joy for the Christmastide. He employed the number Seven because it is considered a magical number (as it is applies to mystery in the liturgy). The final carol, God bless the master of this house, is an amusing combination of all the carols in the composition, in addition to other well-known Christmastide melodies. In certain passages, two, three, even four different carols are being performed at the same time!

Obs.: This beautiful Christmas carol is one of the best-loved carols in the world.
The author of the original lyrics (in German) was Joseph Mohr (1792-1848), a Catholic priest. The composer of the music, Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863), was an Austrian primary school teacher, church organist and composer of the 19th century. Mohr and Gruber first performed Silent Night on December 24, 1818, at Christmas Mass in St. Nicholas Church in Austria, with guitar accompaniment, and with the St. Nicholas choir repeating the last two lines of each verse.
This score is an arrangement for Choir SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), set in the key of C Major.
This score includes the complete lyrics in English (3 verses). The English translation was realized by Bishop John Freeman Young (1820-1885).

The melody comes from a French manuscript from 1613 which is based on the well known chord sequence LA FOLIA.
The subject matter of the text is quite original: Joseph's frustration over the fact that a better place for his betrothed Mary to give birth could not be found, while she consoles him because the poor people of the world will be able to identify with them exactly for that. Duration just under 3 and a half minutes.
It may also be performed just with the strings or just with the organ, depending on the resources available. The pdf file includes conductor's score, choir score, and parts. The attached mp3 file is a converted sibelius file.

Here her version of the O Antiphons provides a means of contemporary reflection on those ancient texts. The three short movements are untitled but the texts begin 1. O Wisdom, 2. I wait with quickened hope for crooked paths to straighten, and 3. You who make wastelands bloom. The music is masterful, at times introspective and gentle, at times sweeping and dramatic. A jewel for an accomplished ensemble. Duration: 9:00
