I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.

The fifth and final movement of Pederson’s powerful five movement work, A Vision Unfolding. Very few texts cast as beautiful a vision for society as this iconic Langston Hughes poem: I dream a world where none are scorned, where love will bless the earth and peace its paths adorn. There are many choral settings of this powerful text, but Pederson’s treatment deserves serious consideration. This piece was written in response to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s I have a Dream speech. The text dialogues between two Langston Hughes poems, Harlem, and Dreams. One poem summarizes the pain of broken promises and the other encourages faith that things will get better, because the alternative is absolute despair. Both contain essential truths still evident in today's turbulent times.
Although the text expresses sentiments that might be the stuff of childhood and naiveté, the music is turbulent, perhaps hinting at the cynicism of today's world. Dramatic and moving, with convincing choral writing and a virtuosic piano accompaniment, this piece is an experience not soon forgotten. Duration: 4:10.

Texts by Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, Robert Bode, Shanelle Gabriel, and Pederson invite the listener to reach out and build bridges of care and connection, that we might find a better way of being in community. That we might stand in solidarity with those whose voices are too often dismissed, regardless of their skin color, sexual orientation, faith background, or other characteristic. That we might not dismiss, disdain, and judge those whose politics are different from ours, but that we might make the uncomfortable effort to see them as people just as worthy of respect and dignity. Each of the five movements in the work can be performed as a stand-alone piece; and choirs are welcome to craft their own spoken word narration (poetry, speech excerpts, etc) throughout the work to explore themes and perspectives that most resonate for their community/audience.
