Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Arranged by Stanley M Hoffman. 21st Century,Classical,Patriotic. 16 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #1044314. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1465704).

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded.

I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed.

“Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.”

—John F. Kennedy

Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow

For so many years a voice sounded in Jewish hearts saying,
“We want to have a home, we want to have a life again.”
Enough blood has already streamed through rivers,
the blood shed by our brothers *[and sisters],
they, who for freedom of strangers and nation died.
Now, the dream we dreamt for a long time has been awakened in us.
We want to ?ght for our state, our country.
The moment that we have been waiting for and been praying for
two thousand years has brought us a spark of hope.
We must not despair, for we are nevertheless Jews.
We must and must want to persevere.
A time will come which itself will become a symbol of our tragedy,
and which will remain forever in our hearts -
a burning ?ame, and a joyful feast.

Composed by Kevin G. Pace (ASCAP), Mary Ann W. Snowball. Praise & Worship,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 3 pages. Kevin G. Pace #640737. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1035521).

A beautiful, sacred hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball. Text: Blessed are the pure in heart where no stains appear, Where there’s inward holiness and the Savior’s near. Tainted sin has been erased, leaving no mistake to trace. Cleansed by ritual washings brings sight with grateful tears in his holy presence. Blessed are the pure in heart changed through God’s pure grace, Free of selfishness and greed, now in sacred space. Righteousness has washed each spot through the teachings Jesus taught. Consecrated longing brings God’s most hallowed place in his holy presence. Blessed are the pure in heart where all guilt has fled, Where each soul is sanctified, for the Savior bled. Sacrifice fulfilled the price; He became the living Christ. All the pure in heart will know joy just as He said, in his holy presence.

Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. 4 pages. Con Spirito Music #1070393. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1493730).

Sing, O Sing, This Blessed Morn is a hymn commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Written by Anglican bishop, scholar, author, and poet Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885), it was published in his collection, The Holy Year; or Hymns for Sundays and Holy-Days, and Other Occasions (1862).

Rather than a retelling of the Nativity story, the hymn is more a statement of beliefs about the nature and work of Christ, echoing elements of the Nicene Creed in phrases such as:

God from God, and Light from Light
God himself comes down from heav'n
One with us in human birth
God with us ... deigns forever now to dwell
born for us that we born again in him may be
with thy Spirit may [we] be ... with the Father and with thee

This joyful, medium-easy setting of Sing, O Sing, This Blessed Morn for SATB voices and organ is mostly unison, with SATB on the first half of stanzas 3 and 5, and on the concluding alleluias.

The lyrics reflect on America's beginnings with a few people seeking freedom to worship God freely. They recall the battles fought to gain that freedom. It recalls the founding of our nation based on trust in God, the weaving of Judeo-Christian principles into our founding documents. Despite mistakes made, our nation has been blessed by God through repentance and forgiveness. It recognizes the threats of secular culture and the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith .... we must be diligent to continue affirming that, In God We Trust.

Composed by Text: Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) Tune: Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914. Arranged by Ken Litton. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. 11 pages. Artist of Note, Inc. #1066874. Published by Artist of Note, Inc. (A0.1490010).

Whiter Than the Snow/Eden Reeder Latta  - Henry Southwick Perkins BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN
arr. Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!
From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).
The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original.  The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.
The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.
I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.
