SKU: A0.837496

Composed by Martin Rinkart. Arranged by Brett L. Wery. Holiday,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 44 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5753937. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837496).

SET B

Conductor’s Score,Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, SATB Choir/Organ

Now Thank We All Our God was originally written ca. 1636 by Protestant minister, Martin Rinkart. The melody is attributed to Lutheran Hymnist, Johann CrĂĽger and was used in three J.S. Bach chorales but the most common version we hear today was harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840.

Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God.

This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13:

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?

The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question  of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!

Composed in 2013, and first sung by the choir of Calvary Lutheran Church, West Chester, PA, it is a fresh viewpoint on Christmas Eve. Here are some program notes:

Johann Franck (1618-1677) was born in Guben, Germany, the son of a lawyer.
Like his father, Johann studied law at the University of Konigsburg, where–in
addition to his studies–he developed a warm friendship with a group of hymnists
and poets. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became
mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soon
became known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind
Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns,
building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep
through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the
herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness,
and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of
encouragement.

Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here.

SKU: A0.1277132

Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 21st Century,Christian,Classical,Latin. Octavo. 128 pages. Adrian Gagiu #868444. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1277132).

Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only).
Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque” (which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patre”, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nations”, more appropriate in the concert hall.

The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis” and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis” gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deo”, „et ascendit in caelis”, „in remissionem peccatorum” and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus est”, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixus”, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibilium”, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto” etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit).

„Kyrie” is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria” begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo” has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange lingua”, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria” and „Credo” end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris” and „et vitam venturi saeculi”, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei” end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctus”). „Judicare” quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae” plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus” and „Benedictus” sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Dei”, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi” and „dona nobis pacem”). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison” theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully.

Composed by Curtis Hanson. Sacred,World. Octavo. 12 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032679. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719511).

September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God who is the God (or Allah, or Yahweh) of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. The only text in the first three sections is a wailing Oh intoned by the choir. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the choir and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes in the coda with the phrase Dona nobis pacem and an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11.

A highlight of the 2019 Christmas At Luther concerts, this festive work has an optional parts for brass and organ or for full orchestra. At first the choir takes the part of the angels, singing Be not afraid! The first four notes of the piece become a sweeping, recurring refrain, soaring upward like the angels themselves each time the title words appear. The effect of the audience finally joining in the traditional melody for Hark! the Herald Angels Sing is another joyful surprise.
