Our news feeds shower us with reports about war, climate and environmental catastrophes, and about authoritarian regimes advancing their positions. What will become of us? What kind of world are we passing on to our children?This poem gives me a ray of hope in the midst of despair, offering a moment’s rest while my own – and all mankind’s – smallness is revealed. It also allows me to sense the presence of something greater.My musical interpretation is based on these reflections. The conflict between anxiety and peace, dissonance and consonance, open textures versus clusters. The piece and its phrases are well-suited to interpretation, and to being performed with a great deal of freedom. – Håkan Svensson.

PLANET ORIGAMI : Is my latest play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of family orientated musicals and takes the audience ‘Out of this World’ to a strange little planet in a far distant galaxy on a small barren rocky planet called BEEZEDON. This is a place entirely inhabited by a race of androids, who after some catastrophic event, were the only machines immune from the ensuing radiation which destroyed every living life form and fauna. Before leaving for a safer haven, the emigrating intelligencia built a new colony of these ‘droids and programmed them to make their planet beautiful again by carpeting it with new flowers, when it was deemed ‘safe.’ The droids had carried out this programme diligently for the next thousand years. However no one had thought through the consequence of instigating such a rigid programme and when their preliminary attempts ended in failure and the fauna died,these clever machines found a perfect solution by refering to their data banks and manufacturing replicas from synthesised plastic. Once the programme was completed and with no more space left, the ‘droids instantly ‘restored' themselves and began creating their world all over again. This is where my story begins:-     â€˜Melody Mayflower’, Is a newly appointed Earth’s Ambassador and a representative of the Commission for Harmony and Concilliation, an organisation which has been extending its borders throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own star system has become a recent member and Melody is one of their many Goodwill Ambassadors. Although she doesn’t know it, she has been selected for the onerous task of convincing the Droid Nation that their programme is now obselete, as Beezedon is now free of contamination, therefore ready for re-planting with organic material.

If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today.These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.

Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction� (2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.
