A melody found in a 1360 German manuscript is highly similar, and it is from this manuscript that the music is usually dated. The carol became more prominent in England after being arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst.This arrangement is written for a choir that usually sings SAB music and can split the soprano. The first verse is for unison male voices, the second verse becomes somewhat more independent for all four parts, the third verse is in a loose canon form, and the final verse is again more independent with progressively closer harmony as the piece evolves. Thus it would provide a good challenge for the young choir but should be accessible for ensembles with at least modest abilities. It would make a wonderful addition to any school or community program.
