Luther's Words for SATB chorus and piano was composed for the ordination of Pastor Sandra Shaw. It's based on an excerpt from a sermon given by Martin Luther in 1521.
„Das Leben ist nicht ein Frommsein, sondern ein Frommwerden, nicht eine Gesundheit, sondern ein Gesundwerden, nicht ein Sein, sondern ein Werden, nicht eine Ruhe, sondern eine Übung. Wir sind’s noch nicht, wir werden’s aber. Es ist noch nicht getan oder geschehen, es ist aber im Gang und im Schwang. Es ist nicht das Ende, es ist aber der Weg.“
Translated into English:
This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being, but becoming, not rest, but exercise.
We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it. The process is not yet finished, but it keeps going on. This is not the end,
but this is the road. All does not yet gleam in the glory, but all is being purified.
Contempory Christian setting of the text makes this a popular anthem in church choirs of many denominations.
